To remove metadata with Windows’ built-in tools, right-click the file in File Explorer, choose Properties > Details > Remove Properties and Personal Information, then create a cleaned copy or select properties to remove. For Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, run Document Inspector separately. Neither method guarantees that every kind of metadata or hidden content has been erased, so inspect the output before sharing.
Remove file properties in File Explorer
This is the simplest built-in option for supported properties in photos and other files. The exact dialog wording and available choices can vary with the Windows build and file type; the workflow is documented in Microsoft community guidance and a Windows how-to, rather than a current official Microsoft consumer support article for the precise dialog flow.

Photo Metadata Editor Pro | $0.99 | Buy on Amazon |
- In File Explorer, right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and select Remove Properties and Personal Information.
- Choose the option to create a copy with all possible properties removed, or choose specific properties to remove from the original if those options are offered.
- Open the resulting file’s Properties > Details and review the fields before sharing it.
Choose a copy when you want to preserve the original. The operation applies to properties available through that control; it is not proof that every metadata block, hidden item, or file-system attribute has been erased.
What a displayed owner, path, or computer name means
A value visible in Properties may describe the local file or its file-system context rather than be embedded in the file’s contents. A Microsoft Q&A discussion raises this distinction after a user still saw owner, computer, or path information. That community discussion does not establish a universal rule for every field or file type. Inspect the actual copy you plan to send, and avoid assuming that a local property will—or will not—travel with the file.

Remove personal information from Office documents
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files can contain information beyond ordinary file properties. Author, title, subject, last editor, and creation date may appear alongside comments, revision marks, hidden text, off-slide objects, or other content, depending on how the document was used.
- Save a copy of the document, then open that copy in its Office app.
- Go to File > Info > Check for Issues > Inspect Document.
- Select the categories you want inspected and run the inspection.
- Review the findings, then use Remove All only for categories you intend to clear.
- Save and reopen the copy to check the result.
Microsoft recommends working on a copy because removed data may not be recoverable with Undo. Document Inspector also cannot remove every kind of information, and restrictions on shared workbooks can prevent removal of some data. See Microsoft’s Document Inspector guidance for the categories and limitations.
What EXIF includes—and why metadata removal varies
EXIF is one family of image metadata, not a synonym for every kind of information a file can contain. It can include camera and photographic attributes. Microsoft describes Windows image metadata as using a TIFF-based IFD structure and documents metadata queries for JPEG, PNG, GIF, and TIFF, while support for individual properties depends on the image container and codec. Some camera RAW formats may also support EXIF. The Windows Imaging Component metadata overview explains the underlying structures.
Windows can read and write selected image properties, but unsupported properties or formats may produce errors. A property shown for one image type may not be available for another. The WIC metadata-writing documentation describes a developer-facing API for removing a named metadata item; it is not a simple general-purpose consumer workflow.

If you need tag-level control or broad metadata handling beyond Explorer’s supported properties, ExifTool is an advanced option. Its Windows installation guidance covers setup, and its FAQ discusses metadata removal. Make a copy first and inspect the result, especially before batch changes: stripping metadata from some formats, including certain RAW images, can interfere with display. Do not assume one removal command is safe or complete for every file type.
Choose a method and verify the file
| Method | Best suited to | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| File Explorer properties | A quick pass over properties Windows makes available for a supported file | Does not guarantee removal of every embedded metadata block or hidden item; options vary by build and file type. |
| Office Document Inspector | Personal information and hidden content in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files | Some information cannot be removed, and shared-workbook restrictions may apply. |
| ExifTool | Advanced tag-level work across supported file types | Requires care with file-format-specific behavior; broad stripping can affect display for some files. |
Before sending a file, check the cleaned copy rather than relying on the removal action alone. For photos, review Properties > Details and consider whether your goal is to clear a few visible fields or address broader embedded metadata. For Office files, inspect the relevant categories and reopen the saved copy. If the recipient needs a particular format or document feature, verify that it still works after cleanup.
