To set up an AI IDE for Angular, start with a working Angular project, add Angular’s current IDE-specific instruction file, and give the assistant focused tasks whose changes you can inspect and test. You can optionally connect Angular CLI through its experimental Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Angular-aware tools; MCP is not required to use Angular’s prompt rules.
1. Start with a working Angular project
AI instructions work best when the assistant can see the project’s actual structure and conventions. If you already have an Angular workspace, open its root folder in your chosen IDE. Otherwise, create one using Angular’s local setup guide.
The guide’s current prerequisites and recommendations include Node.js v22.22.3 or newer, a terminal for CLI commands, Visual Studio Code as the recommended editor, and Angular Language Service as a recommended extension. These are the values on the page accessed October 7, 2026; Node.js and Angular CLI requirements can change, so check the live guide before installing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Install the Angular CLI using a package manager supported by the guide: npm, pnpm, yarn, or bun.
- In a terminal, create a project with
ng new <project-name>and follow the prompts. - Open the new project folder in your IDE.
- Start the app with
npm start, as shown in Angular’s guide, and confirm the project runs before asking an assistant to modify it.
2. Add Angular’s persistent IDE instructions
Angular publishes framework-specific instruction files for AI-enabled development environments. The instructions are intended to help language models follow Angular best practices and can be supplied as system instructions or prompt context. Angular’s AI setup documentation links to configuration guidance for Firebase Studio, Copilot-powered IDEs, Cursor, JetBrains IDEs, VS Code, and Windsurf.
#1 Best Overall
Use the instruction file and placement intended for your host IDE; filenames and repository locations differ by environment. Follow Angular’s LLM prompts and AI IDE setup page for the current file and setup steps. Angular says these rules are updated regularly, so fetch the latest version instead of copying a static snippet from an old tutorial.
Persistent rules provide general Angular guidance. They do not replace task-specific context: tell the assistant which feature or files matter, what behavior is expected, what project constraints to preserve, and how you will verify the change.

3. Write prompts the project can act on
A useful prompt narrows the work to a reviewable outcome. For a small fix, describe the symptom, point to the relevant files or feature area, state constraints, and request the appropriate test or other verification. For work spanning several files or involving a broad refactor, ask for a plan first and agree on the scope before authorizing edits.

- Context: Identify relevant files, components, services, or existing patterns; attach or reference only the context needed.
- Constraints: Say what must remain unchanged and note any project-specific requirements.
- Verification: Ask for suitable tests or checks and a summary of what was run.
These are workflow practices, not a guarantee that a particular prompt will produce correct code. Keep requests small enough that you can understand the proposed diff and evaluate the result.

4. Decide whether Angular CLI MCP is useful
Angular’s CLI includes an experimental MCP server that can expose Angular-aware capabilities to compatible assistants. The server is optional: use Angular’s instruction files without MCP if persistent framework guidance is all you need. MCP is more relevant when you want an assistant to interact with Angular CLI tools, workspace analysis, Angular-aware documentation, code generation, or development and test workflows. Available tools depend on the current server version.
Angular documents starting the server with npx @angular/cli mcp. Configuration is host-specific: for example, the VS Code instructions use .vscode/mcp.json and a servers property, while several other hosts use their own configuration file and an mcpServers property. Do not paste one IDE’s JSON example into another host; follow the current Angular CLI MCP documentation for a supported host and its configuration.

Angular also describes using its AI Agent Skills alongside MCP where the host supports them: skills provide instruction-level guidance, while MCP provides actions. Whether either feature is available depends on the host and its current support.

The Angular MCP server is experimental. Its --read-only and --local-only options limit which tools the server registers, but Angular cautions that these options do not guarantee the host agent cannot edit project files or communicate over a network. Do not treat them as complete privacy or edit-control boundaries. Review the host’s behavior and permissions, and inspect proposed edits and commands.
5. Review and verify every change
Use a loop that keeps the assistant’s work observable:
- Define one task, its constraints, and what a successful result should do.
- Provide the smallest useful set of file references or project context.
- For a multi-file task, request and review a plan before proceeding with edits.
- Inspect the proposed diff and any command output before accepting changes.
- Run the relevant project build, tests, or other checks; if a check fails, give the assistant the specific failure and request a targeted correction.
GitHub’s Copilot IDE guidance describes repository custom instructions and file references as ways to provide prompt context, and recommends evaluating responses and reviewing proposed changes and command output. Its Ask, Agent, and Plan modes are Copilot-specific examples; other IDEs may use different labels and controls.
Which setup should you choose?
| Setup choice | What it provides | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Angular instruction file | Persistent Angular guidance in the IDE’s expected location | You want framework conventions in the assistant’s context without connecting CLI tools. |
| Angular CLI MCP | Experimental access to Angular-aware tools and CLI-related workflows | You want a compatible assistant to interact with documented workspace or CLI capabilities. |
| Instructions plus MCP | Persistent guidance and, where supported, assistant-accessible actions | Your host supports both and you have reviewed its configuration and permissions. |
Whichever arrangement you use, keep the instructions current, match configuration to the host IDE, and verify changes in the project rather than relying on the assistant’s description of its own output.
