To accept customer payments for goods or services on Venmo, use a business profile or an eligible payment explicitly marked as a purchase. Venmo says ordinary personal transfers are not an authorized way to collect for sales. A business profile is linked to your personal account and can support customer discovery, QR payments and other merchant features, but it also brings fees, verification requirements and limits.
What you need before setting up
Venmo offers business profiles to individuals and sole proprietors, associations and clubs, and registered businesses. A business profile accompanies a personal Venmo account; it is not a separate account with its own login. Your account credentials remain tied to the personal account.
- Have access to a personal Venmo account, or be ready to create one as part of the business signup flow.
- Decide whether the business uses an EIN. Venmo asks for it when applicable; a sole proprietor without an EIN can use personal information and an SSN or ITIN.
- Prepare the business name, username, description, category and address, plus the contact details and social or website links you want customers to see.
- Be prepared to provide identity details or supporting documents. Registered businesses may also be asked for beneficial-owner information.
Incomplete or unsuccessful identity verification can restrict the profile’s ability to accept payments or move money. See Venmo’s identity verification guidance for details.

How to create a Venmo business profile
If you already use Venmo
- Open the Venmo app and start from the Me tab or Settings.
- Choose the option to create or add a business profile, then follow the prompts.
- Enter the business and public-facing details requested, including the applicable tax identification information.
- Complete any identity or business verification steps Venmo requests.
If you are new to Venmo
Choose Venmo’s business signup flow. It allows a new customer to create a personal account and business profile together. The profile is then managed through the app, while account statements can be viewed on the web. Venmo’s business profile signup instructions explain the current flow.

How customers can pay you
Use the business profile for sales rather than asking customers to send an ordinary personal transfer. Venmo’s rule is: “The only way to accept payments for goods and services on Venmo is to be explicitly authorized to accept Venmo for purchases.” See its Buying and Selling on Venmo FAQ for the distinction and applicable terms.
Online and in-app discovery
Customers can search for a business by its name or username. Venmo says search visibility is controlled by a marketing setting, so check that setting if you want customers to find the profile that way. A profile can display business details, a website and social links. Some industries can also show eligible product photos in an in-app gallery.

In-person QR payments
Customers can scan the business’s QR code to find and pay the business. Venmo also references QR kits; a QR code payment sign or countertop display may make the code easier to use, but it is an optional accessory rather than a requirement.
Tap to Pay
Venmo describes Tap to Pay for compatible cards and digital wallets. Its fees differ from payments received from other Venmo accounts, so check the applicable fee for the payment method before choosing it.

Fees, taxes and access to funds
Venmo charges fees for business payments, and the applicable fee depends on the payment channel. The current complete fee schedule is not established here, so consult Venmo’s live fees page before setting prices or estimating margins. Do not assume an in-person Tap to Pay transaction costs the same as a payment from another Venmo account.
Business profiles also have tax reporting requirements. Reporting thresholds and rules can change, so review Venmo’s current guidance and keep your own sales records; a Venmo report does not replace your responsibility to understand and meet tax obligations.

Payment and transfer limits apply, and eligible payments may be held. Venmo says eligible non-tax-related holds are expected to be released within 21 days; that describes its policy, not a guarantee that every payment will be available on that timeline. Check the payment and transfer limits and purchase terms before relying on a particular payment for immediate cash flow.
Refunds and purchase protection
Business profiles support in-app refunds, but Venmo says the original processing fee is not returned when you refund a business payment. Include that cost when deciding how to handle cancellations and returns. See Venmo’s refund guidance.

Do not promise that every transaction is covered by Purchase Protection. Venmo describes protection for eligible purchase payments, subject to its terms. Eligibility depends on the payment and circumstances; review the Buying and Selling FAQ rather than treating protection as automatic.

Is Venmo for Business worth it?
It may suit a small business whose customers already use Venmo and who value an in-app business presence, QR payments or Tap to Pay. Before relying on it, compare the live fees for the channels you will accept, account for verification and tax obligations, and decide whether payment holds and limits fit your cash-flow needs. A business that needs predictable settlement timing, broader payment options or a different set of merchant controls should compare alternatives against those requirements rather than assuming Venmo is a full replacement for every payment system.
