A local API is ready for a caller only when it can be reached at its intended address and port—or when the application explicitly reports that it is ready. A fail-closed probe treats a refused connection, timeout, or unhealthy readiness response as unavailable, so a client, startup script, or integration test does not proceed as if the API were ready.

What a loopback probe proves—and what it does not

A configured server is not necessarily a listening server. Configuration tells an application which host and port to use; a socket probe checks whether a connection can be made to the intended local endpoint. In LoopBack, the server’s listening property indicates whether it is listening for connections (LoopBack API: core.server.listening).

A successful raw socket connection proves that something accepted a connection at that address and port. It does not prove that the API can handle a particular request, that its required dependencies are healthy, or that the endpoint belongs to the expected process. For application-level assurance, check an HTTP readiness endpoint instead.

Choose the check that matches the decision

Check What success establishes What it can include Best fit
Raw socket probe A connection was accepted at the specified host and port. Only what the connection test itself verifies; it does not establish application readiness or dependency health. A simple gate before attempting an API request.
HTTP readiness endpoint The application reports that it is ready to accept traffic. Application-defined conditions, which may include dependencies needed to serve requests. Startup gates or routing decisions that need application-level readiness.

Neither method is a universal winner. Choose based on what the caller must know, and treat a failed or inconclusive result as unavailable rather than success.

Not only network cables, but also phone lines and BNC cables.

Keep readiness separate from liveness

Readiness asks whether an application is able to accept traffic; liveness asks whether its process should be restarted. LoopBack describes readiness probes as a way to decide when a container is available for accepting traffic (LoopBack Documentation: Health checks).

Keep liveness checks inexpensive and predictable. LoopBack advises against putting dependency checks in liveness probes: a dependency that is temporarily unavailable can make the application unready without showing that its process is irrecoverably dead. A dependency check may instead inform readiness when that dependency is required to handle traffic.

Gate a caller on a bounded result

Use the intended local address and port, or an application readiness endpoint, and give the check a finite time limit. A fail-closed caller should proceed only after the chosen check succeeds; connection refusal, timeout, or an unhealthy readiness response should leave the API unavailable to that workflow. A port being configured is not a success condition.

The exact retry interval, timeout, and backoff depend on the application and environment; there is no universal value established here. Set limits that fit the startup behavior you expect, and ensure the overall wait is bounded so a failed service cannot leave a script hanging indefinitely. If the limit expires, return a clear failure or nonzero exit status rather than launching the dependent step as though readiness had been confirmed.

LoopBack configuration: host, port, and startup listening

LoopBack REST server configuration includes host and port settings and a listenOnStart option, whose documented default is true (LoopBack Documentation: Customizing Server configuration). These settings configure server behavior; they do not by themselves prove that a listener is accepting connections. Use the server’s listening state or a probe against the intended endpoint to verify that distinction.

Choose the host for the environment in which the API runs. A local binding can limit where the service accepts connections, but it is not authentication and does not make an API safe in every environment. Do not treat loopback binding as a substitute for access controls or deployment-specific security decisions.

Kubernetes health endpoints

For Kubernetes API health checks, follow the guidance for the more specific livez and readyz endpoints rather than deprecated healthz. Use the HTTP status code to determine success or failure; do not infer health from the mere presence of a response (Kubernetes: API health endpoints).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This guidance concerns Kubernetes API health endpoints. For an application’s own local API, use the readiness semantics and endpoint that the application actually provides; endpoint names and behavior are not interchangeable by assumption.
