First identify whether your active WordPress theme is a block theme or a classic theme: on a block theme, edit Appearance > Editor > Templates > WooCommerce > Product Catalog; on a classic theme, use the page or builder editor and the available catalog settings in the Customizer. The Product Catalog template controls the main shop layout and can take precedence over content edited directly on the assigned Shop page.

Choose the right editing surface

The Shop page can be assembled from different places, depending on your theme and setup. If a change made in the page editor does not appear in the storefront, the catalog template, theme, or a page builder may own the visible layout.

  • Block theme: Use the Site Editor to edit WooCommerce templates. WooCommerce’s full store-template editing features require a block theme. See WooCommerce’s Product Catalog guide and Using Blocks in WooCommerce.
  • Classic theme: Edit ordinary page content through Pages > All Pages or the editor supplied by your theme or page builder. If available, use Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product Catalog for supported catalog options.
  • Third-party builder or theme templates: Check the builder’s own template controls if the standard WordPress editors do not govern the storefront layout.

Confirm which page WooCommerce uses as Shop

To check or change the assigned Shop page, open WooCommerce > Settings > Products, choose the page in the Shop page dropdown, then save. WooCommerce documents that the shop URL behavior is tied to the assigned page and its slug; changing the slug does not necessarily make the shop behave like an ordinary page. If no Shop page is assigned, the /shop/ address can still display the default product listing. See WooCommerce Pages.

Edit the Product Catalog template on a block theme

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Editor > Templates.
  2. Open WooCommerce > Product Catalog.
  3. Select the Product Collection block to adjust how products are displayed, or select surrounding blocks to edit the rest of the catalog layout.
  4. Make the changes you need, then save the template.

The Product Collection block dynamically displays catalog products. Its controls let you adjust layout and queries, sorting, and pagination; you can also rearrange or style blocks and add supporting blocks. Depending on the template, the surrounding layout may include breadcrumbs, an archive title, a term description, notices, a result count, catalog sorting, and product filters. WooCommerce explains its structure and controls in the Product Collection block guide.

Available filters can include price range, rating, attributes, stock status, category, brand, and tag. Which controls are available depends on the template and catalog setup. A template change affects the pages that use that template, so it has broader scope than editing content on a single page. WooCommerce documents how to clear template customizations and return a template to its default state in Customizing your Store with Templates.

Adjust catalog display options on a classic theme

If your classic theme exposes WooCommerce catalog controls, go to Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product Catalog. Depending on the theme and WooCommerce setup, options can include whether the Shop displays products, categories, or both; what appears on category pages; product sorting; products per row; and rows per page. The exact controls vary. See WooCommerce’s Product Catalog Customizer documentation.

Know what each approach changes

Approach Where to edit Theme compatibility Typical scope
Product Catalog template Appearance > Editor > Templates > WooCommerce > Product Catalog Block themes Reusable catalog layout for pages using the template
Catalog Customizer Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product Catalog Classic themes that expose these controls Supported catalog display settings
Page or builder editor Pages > All Pages, or the theme/page-builder editor Depends on the theme and builder Ordinary page content or layouts managed by that builder

When built-in controls do not meet a specific requirement, WooCommerce points users to Marketplace extensions or Agency Partners for advanced customization; those are options rather than prerequisites for editing the shop.

Troubleshoot edits that are not showing

  1. Verify the Shop assignment: Check the page selected under WooCommerce > Settings > Products.
  2. Check the Product Catalog template: On a block theme, open Appearance > Editor > Templates > WooCommerce > Product Catalog. The template can take priority over edits to the assigned Shop page.
  3. Identify the active theme type: Use the Site Editor for block-theme templates; use the Customizer or theme’s page-editing workflow for classic themes.
  4. Check builder-owned templates: If a page builder or theme supplies the shop layout, make the change in its corresponding editor.

These checks follow WooCommerce’s guidance on Shop page assignment, Product Catalog templates, and block and classic theme editing.
