An API can check defined relationships among financial facts reported to the SEC, but “adds up” is not a meaningful accuracy claim until the rules and their limits are clear. SEC data APIs make EDGAR information available to developers; the SEC’s financial-statement datasets also warn that reported values can contain redundancies and inconsistencies. A checker can identify selected inconsistencies. That alone does not establish that a company’s statements are correct or that the API has audit-level assurance.
What an SEC data checker can—and cannot—establish
There are distinct stages between retrieving a filing and deciding whether its figures are trustworthy:
- Data retrieval: obtaining filing information and XBRL facts from EDGAR.
- Structural validation: checking that data is formed and presented in ways accepted by a system’s rules.
- Consistency checking: applying specified rules to see whether selected facts relate as expected.
- Assurance: establishing that the reported information is materially correct. A custom consistency checker does not provide this merely by flagging or passing rules.
The SEC says its Financial Statement Data Sets contain numeric data “as filed.” The same documentation cautions that submissions may have redundancies, inconsistencies, and discrepancies compared with other publication formats. “As filed” describes the source values; it is not a certification that every value is error-free. Where the SEC data comes from
The SEC’s data.sec.gov APIs provide public access to EDGAR information, including entity and submission details and XBRL financial-statement data in JSON. The SEC also described a bulk zip of API data updated nightly in its September 8, 2021 announcement. That announcement establishes what the SEC described at that time; check the current API documentation for present endpoint details, access requirements, and refresh behavior before building against them. #1 Best Overall
The SEC’s Financial Statement Data Sets include submission information, numeric facts rendered on primary statements, tag definitions, and statement-presentation data. Their documented scope includes primary financial statements and footnotes. The datasets can support analysis, but their as-filed nature and stated inconsistencies matter whenever a tool turns those facts into pass/fail results. SEC Financial Statement Data Sets Readme
What “adds up” needs to mean
The phrase could describe several different kinds of rules, and they should not be treated as interchangeable. A claim about an API should specify exactly which relationships it tests rather than suggesting that it checks every aspect of a filing.
Rank #2
- Within-statement arithmetic: whether a defined set of line items reconciles under a stated rule.
- Cross-statement relationships: whether facts on separate statements satisfy a specified relationship.
- Period comparisons: whether selected facts remain consistent across reporting periods under defined conditions.
These are examples of possible rule categories, not a description of any particular API’s implementation. To evaluate a checker, readers need its supported filings and periods, the exact rules, and examples showing both the input facts and the resulting flags. A passing result means only that the tested rules did not flag the covered data; it does not show that untested relationships or the underlying reporting are correct.

EDGAR applies filing-validation rules, but the SEC’s FAQ describes outcomes that depend on an error’s type and location. Some XBRL errors in exhibits may cause those exhibits to be stripped before a filing is accepted, while an XBRL error in an Inline XBRL primary document can suspend the entire submission. Less severe warnings may remain in a filing. These are SEC filing-validation outcomes, not evidence that an independent API uses the same rules or duplicates the SEC validator. SEC EDGAR FAQ

- Used Book in Good Condition
XBRL makes financial information machine-processable and supplements traditional filing formats; viewers are used to render that information for people. The SEC’s interactive-data guide also says companies are not required to obtain assurance on interactive data. The guide is dated and is background, not a substitute for current rules or legal advice. SEC Interactive Data guide
What to look for before relying on a checker
A credible description of a custom API should let a reader understand what went in, what was tested, and what a result does—and does not—mean. In particular, look for:
Rank #4
- The SEC endpoint or dataset used and the forms, entities, periods, and amendments supported.
- The precise relationships each rule checks, with representative input and output examples.
- How the implementation treats custom XBRL tags, dimensions or segments, units, signs, duration facts versus point-in-time facts, duplicate or amended filings, and restatements.
- Validation evidence, including test cases and known false positives, false negatives, and other limitations.
- An explanation of flagged results that identifies the facts and rule involved, rather than presenting an unexplained score or a broad assertion of correctness.
The SEC’s dataset documentation describes tags, units, segments, periods, and as-filed submissions; it does not establish how any particular third-party checker handles them. SEC Financial Statement Data Sets Readme
Getting SEC financial-statement data into a workflow
The SEC provides APIs and downloadable datasets as ways to access EDGAR data. A reader starting from a practical question—such as how to pull financial-statement data from the SEC into a spreadsheet—should first choose a source and confirm its current documentation, then distinguish the retrieved facts from any additional rules applied to them. The SEC’s API announcement describes the public data service and bulk data; current endpoint behavior and usage requirements should be checked in the SEC’s documentation before implementation.
