In Plane, choose a project for a body of work, a module to group related work, a cycle to plan work for a defined period, and an initiative to coordinate a broader goal across projects. They solve different organizational problems and can be used together.

How to decide which Plane structure to use

  1. Does this work need its own container and workflow? Create a project. Project settings also govern access and which features are enabled.
  2. Are you grouping work by feature, component, campaign, or another logical area? Use a module within the project. It is not a timebox.
  3. Is the team planning work for a defined period? Use a cycle with start and due dates.
  4. Does the outcome span multiple projects? Use an initiative to organize the related projects or work items under one broader objective.

Plane describes work items as the units of work. As its Work Items documentation puts it, “Every work item belongs to one project, and everything else in Plane is built around it.”

What each structure is for

Structure Use it for Where it applies
Project A body of work with its own team workflow and resources. Project-level container for work items, cycles, modules, pages, and other resources. Project settings include access, members, timezone, and enabled features.
Module A logical grouping, such as a feature, component, or campaign. Within a project. A work item may belong to more than one module.
Cycle Work targeted to a defined period, such as a sprint or iteration. Within a project. A work item can belong to one cycle at a time.
Initiative A broader objective that depends on related projects or work items. At workspace level, across projects. Availability depends on workspace settings and plan entitlement.

When to use a project

Start with a project when the work needs a distinct container and team workflow. Projects hold work items and can contain modules and cycles, along with other resources. Their settings also affect who can access the work and which features are available, so check those settings when configuring a new project.

When to use a module

Use a module when related work belongs together conceptually—for example, work on one feature or component. Modules allow useful groupings without making that grouping a separate project or a time-based commitment. Because a work item can be in multiple modules, a single item can appear in more than one logical grouping.

When to use a cycle

Choose a cycle when the team needs to focus on work within a defined period. Cycles have start and due dates and are the time-based planning layer; they do not replace the project that contains the work or a module that groups it by subject.

A work item can be assigned to one cycle at a time. Overlapping cycle dates are disallowed by default, though Plane documents parallel cycles as an option. If a team needs overlapping timeboxes, check the cycle settings and current documentation before planning around them.

Initiatives are workspace-level rather than project-level.

How the structures fit together

These structures answer different questions, so a team can use them together: the project holds the work, modules group it by logical area, and a cycle identifies the period in which the team is focusing on selected work. An initiative can then connect related projects or work items when they contribute to a shared, broader objective.

Keep the distinction clear: project and initiative describe scope at different levels; module describes a logical grouping; cycle describes a time window. Plane’s documentation does not establish productivity, velocity, or time-saving results for choosing one structure over another.

Check project access and feature settings

Project configuration affects how a team can use these structures. Plane documents different member-access rules for public and private projects, while project settings control feature availability. Before planning with modules or cycles, verify that the relevant features are enabled and that the project’s visibility matches the intended audience.
