To generate a password for a website, choose Use Suggested Password in the 1Password browser extension, or use Password Generator to customize it. In the 1Password app, edit the website’s Login item, select its password field, and choose Create a New Password. In either case, save the updated credential in 1Password and submit the change on the website; changing the saved item alone does not change the website password.
Generate a password in the browser extension
- Open the website’s change-password page. If needed, make sure its current password is saved in 1Password.
- If the website requests the current password, select that field and choose the saved login from the 1Password field icon.
- Select the new-password field and choose Use Suggested Password. To change the suggestion, open its inline settings and choose Password Generator. If no suggestion appears, select the 1Password icon in the field.
- When 1Password asks whether to update the login, save the change. If it suggests the wrong Login item, choose Update Existing and select the correct one.
- Submit or save the new password on the website. Confirm the site accepted the change before leaving the page.
For another way to generate a password in the extension, open the extension pop-up and use its generator. The extension guide also describes generator settings and Password Generator History. Its documented memorable-password languages are English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch; language availability and menu labels can change between versions. Generate a password in a 1Password app
- Open the website’s change-password page and retrieve the current saved password if the site asks for it.
- In 1Password, find the website’s Login item and select Edit.
- Select the password field and choose Create a New Password. Adjust the generator settings to meet the website’s stated rules, then choose Use and save the Login item.
- Copy the new password from the saved item, paste it into the website, and submit or save the website’s change.
If autofill is not working on mobile, copying and pasting from the saved Login item is the documented fallback. For platform-specific instructions, see 1Password’s password generator guide for changing and strengthening passwords.
Choose the right generation route

Use the website’s own password requirements as the guide when adjusting settings. If it rejects a generated password, check which character types or length it requires and generate another that complies.

Generate or change your 1Password account password
Your 1Password account password is different from a website password stored in a Login item. For the account password, 1Password recommends one that is unique, random, and memorable, and advises using its password generator. Its account-password guidance says no specific number, symbol, or capitalization requirements apply. Because 1Password says it cannot access or recover this password, write it in your Emergency Kit and keep the kit somewhere safe. Use Watchtower to prioritize password changes
After generating stronger credentials, Watchtower can help identify saved passwords that are weak, reused, or associated with a breach, so you can decide which accounts to change. 1Password’s guidance on using Watchtower to find account details to change was published August 17, 2026.

1Password says Watchtower checks saved information locally on your device. Its explanation of compromised-password checks says the app creates a 40-character hash and sends only the first five characters to Have I Been Pwned; returned candidate hashes are compared locally.
