If you mainly play role-playing games, the best console is the one that runs the specific RPGs you want and suits how you play. Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if you want to play on a built-in screen or dock the console to a TV; choose PlayStation 5 for Sony’s current console ecosystem and stated PS4-game compatibility; choose Xbox Series X if Xbox backward compatibility or Game Pass matters most to you. These are conditional recommendations, not a ranking based on a comparative test or count of RPGs.
Start with the RPGs you want to play
Before buying, make a short list of must-play games and check each one against the console you are considering. Confirm the exact edition, platform, and—if you plan to use an older game—its compatibility and any disc or digital requirements. A console’s total game catalog or a subscription’s size does not tell you whether your particular RPGs are available.

- Write down the RPGs you most want to play, including specific editions or expansions if those matter to you.
- Check the publisher or platform’s current listing for each title, and confirm which console models it supports.
- For games from an earlier generation, verify compatibility title by title; do not assume every game works or performs identically.
- If you plan to rely on a subscription, check the current catalog and terms before buying. Catalog availability can change.
No like-for-like comparison establishes which system has the largest RPG catalog, so a must-play checklist is a more dependable buying guide than a broad brand claim.

Which console fits your play style?
| Your priority | Best-matched option | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Play at home and away | Nintendo Switch 2 | It has a built-in screen and supports docked TV output. Battery life varies by game. |
| Play RPGs from an existing PS4 collection | PlayStation 5 | Sony says PS5 plays over 8,500 PS4 games; check individual titles and disc or digital requirements. |
| Play older games from several Xbox generations | Xbox Series X | Microsoft describes compatibility across four Xbox generations, but not every title is necessarily supported. |
| Use a changing subscription catalog | Xbox Series X | Game Pass is an access model, not permanent ownership of every game in its catalog. Check current listings and terms. |
| Prefer Sony’s ecosystem and supported DualSense features | PlayStation 5 | Haptics and adaptive triggers depend on support in each game. |
| Buy mostly digital games and expect a large library | Compare storage and expansion costs | Switch 2 has 256 GB internal storage and supports microSD Express expansion. Compare current capacity and expansion options for the other systems before deciding. |
Nintendo Switch 2: best fit for portable and TV play
Switch 2 is the clear choice if you want one console for handheld play and a television. Nintendo’s U.S. specifications list a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920×1080 handheld resolution and maximum TV output of 4K at 60 fps. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Portability and battery life
Nintendo estimates battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game. Treat that as a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed session length: the game being played affects how long the console runs between charges.
Switch-game compatibility
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for the original Switch, while warning that some titles may be unsupported or have partial functionality issues. Nintendo’s compatibility summary is marked current as of June 5, 2025; check the individual game page for the latest status before relying on an older title.
Storage for a digital library
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage and support for microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. The company says other microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch, not as equivalent game-storage expansion for Switch 2. If you expect to keep many digital games installed, include the cost of a compatible microSD Express card in your decision.

PlayStation 5: consider it for Sony’s ecosystem and PS4 games
PS5 is a strong home-console option if its current ecosystem appeals to you or you already own PS4 games you want to keep playing. Sony states that PS5 consoles can play over 8,500 PS4 games and that Game Boost improves frame rates in select PS4 games. The figure covers PS4 games generally; it is not a count of RPGs, and it does not mean every game receives the same performance improvement.
Sony also describes DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in supported games. Because these features depend on individual game support, check whether the RPGs you care about use them before treating them as a deciding factor. Sony’s example of Final Fantasy VII Remake illustrates one role-playing game available in its ecosystem, not a comparative advantage across the whole catalog.
Xbox Series X: consider it for backward compatibility and Game Pass
Xbox Series X is a strong home-console option if your existing library includes Xbox games from earlier generations or you value a subscription catalog. Microsoft describes Series X as compatible with thousands of games across four Xbox generations. That is a manufacturer statement about the overall compatible library, not a count of RPGs; confirm support for each older game you intend to play.

Microsoft describes Game Pass as including hundreds of games, but the catalog and subscription terms can change. A game appearing in a catalog is not the same as owning it, and no particular RPG should be assumed to remain available. Check the current listing before making your purchase decision.
Make the final choice
- Pick Switch 2 if portable play is central and the RPGs you want are available and compatible on Nintendo’s system.
- Pick PS5 if Sony’s current ecosystem or your particular PS4 games are the deciding factor.
- Pick Xbox Series X if your Xbox back catalog or the current Game Pass offering best matches your plans.
For any of the three, verify your must-play titles first. If you are buying digitally, compare the storage you will actually have available and the cost of any expansion you need. For Switch 2, Nintendo specifies microSD Express for game-storage expansion.
