A virtual storage drive is a disk-like device that software presents to an operating system or virtual machine. It behaves like a disk for storage tasks, but its data is held by an underlying resource—such as a disk-image file, a cloud-managed disk, or storage managed by a hypervisor. The drive the system sees and the storage that holds its data are separate layers.
How a virtual storage drive works
Software presents the virtual drive to an operating system or virtual machine as a disk. The system can then use it for familiar disk and file operations, often through a drive letter, mount point, or guest operating system’s disk interface. That presentation does not reveal where the data is physically stored.
In a file-backed example, a virtual disk is represented by an image file on a physical disk. Microsoft describes its Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) format as encapsulating a hard disk in an individual file for use by an operating system as a virtual disk. Microsoft calls the file on the actual disk the backing store. VHDs can host native file systems and support standard disk and file operations; they can also serve as boot disks. These details describe VHD, not every virtual storage product. Microsoft Learn: About VHD

What “virtual drive” can mean
The phrase is context-dependent. It may refer to a virtual disk presented to a computer or VM, but related terms describe other storage layers and should not be treated as exact synonyms.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Virtual disk or virtual hard disk: A disk-like device presented by software. In Microsoft’s VHD example, an image file on physical storage backs the disk.
- Cloud VM disk: Storage attached to a virtual machine through a cloud service. Azure distinguishes managed operating-system and data disks from temporary disks used for short-term application or process storage. Their behavior and durability depend on the service configuration. Microsoft Learn: Overview of Azure Disk Storage
- Hypervisor datastore: A logical container that hides details of underlying storage devices and provides a uniform model for VM files. VMware describes datastores as a storage-management layer, not as an individual virtual drive. VMware: Introduction to Virtual Machine File Management
- Mapped network drive: A local path or drive-letter-style way to access remote shared storage. It is network-backed access, not the same thing as a VHD file-backed virtual disk.
VHD allocation types: a specific example
Microsoft documents three VHD types. These labels describe the VHD format and should not be assumed to apply to every virtual disk format.
| VHD type | How it uses storage | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed | Pre-allocates backing-store space up to the requested maximum size. | The allocated space is reserved on the backing store. |
| Expandable (dynamic or sparse in this VHD context) | Uses backing-store space as data is written. | A configured maximum is not a guarantee that the backing storage has enough free space. Microsoft warns that the API does not check available physical space against the maximum when creating this type. |
| Differencing | Uses a parent disk as its basis and writes later changes to a separate image. | The parent remains unmodified; the differencing image depends on it. |
Microsoft Learn’s VHD overview describes these types and their behavior.

What a virtual drive does—and does not—tell you
- It gives software a disk-like interface. The operating system or VM can work with the presented disk without interacting directly with the physical storage device.
- It does not necessarily add physical capacity. An expanding disk can have a configured maximum larger than the free space available on its backing storage.
- It does not establish persistence by itself. A temporary VM disk is not equivalent to a persistent managed disk; check the platform and disk configuration before relying on stored data.
- It does not specify a universal setup or feature set. Supported formats, capacity limits, performance, snapshots, filesystems, and attachment workflows depend on the platform.
How to identify the kind of drive you mean
For setup or troubleshooting, first identify the product and the storage layer. Check whether the system is showing a VHD or other disk image, a cloud VM disk, a hypervisor datastore, or a mapped network share. On Windows, Microsoft documents commands for managing virtual hard disks in its Manage Virtual Hard Disks guidance. For Windows Dev Drive specifically, Microsoft says to detach the VHD hosting the Dev Drive before deleting the host VHD file; that lifecycle detail is specific to Dev Drive.
