DeepSeek Harness has two starting points on Windows. You can download Harness Desktop from DeepSeek’s official download page, or you can launch the Web UI from a PowerShell window with Node.js and the command npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web. These are separate routes. Installing the desktop app is not the same step as launching the CLI with Node.js, so choose one path first and troubleshoot that path only.

Install the desktop app
Start from DeepSeek’s official download page, which lists Harness Desktop and links a Windows download. Use that page for the current file. Availability on that page can change, so do not rely on an installer link from a mirror or forum post.
The official page text reviewed for this article does not list Windows version requirements, installer file names, or desktop troubleshooting steps. If the installer fails, the official page and the DeepSeek Harness repository are the places to check for current guidance.

This route runs the Harness Web UI in your browser from a local server. It does not install the desktop application.

- Install Node.js. DeepSeek’s official instructions say to install it but do not name a minimum version for Windows. A third-party Windows handbook, last verified on 27 August 2026, reports a Node engine range of
^22.19.0 || >=24.0.0. Treat that range as a third-party claim and confirm it against the installed package’s metadata before you rely on it. - Open PowerShell. Confirm Node is available by running
node --version. - Run
npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web. - Expect the server to start at
http://127.0.0.1:3080. For a local launch, the default browser opens automatically. - If you want the server to run without opening a browser, run
npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web --no-open, then openhttp://127.0.0.1:3080yourself.
Build from source
Building from source is a developer workflow for a checkout of the official deepseek-harness repository. If you only want to use the published Web UI, use the npx route above instead. The documented sequence is:

Check what Windows is actually running
Before you reinstall anything, capture the current state. The commands below come from a community Windows handbook, not from DeepSeek, so treat them as diagnostic leads and run them on your installed release.

Node launches fail after you installed a new runtime
PowerShell may still resolve an older Node, npm, or dsh executable from your PATH. Check which files it selects:

If the paths point to an old installation, remove or reorder the stale entry in your PATH, then close and reopen the terminal. Run node --version again. The handbook identifies stale PATH entries and multiple Node installations as a common cause of this symptom.
The shell tool will not start
Confirm that PowerShell is discoverable and can run a minimal command:

According to the handbook, its documented native Windows setup uses PowerShell and disables POSIX Bash rows. A model response that mentions Bash does not show which executor the active configuration mounted. Check the configuration output for your installed version.

The process exits with an error code
Do not assume Harness itself crashed. A line such as ELIFECYCLE from the package manager can come from a child process that owns the failure. Record:
- the exact command you ran
- stdout and stderr
- the exit code
- the Node, npm, and pnpm versions
- the Windows Application event for the faulting process or module, found in Event Viewer under Windows Logs, then Application
Before sharing any of this, remove tokens, credential arguments, private prompts, and sensitive file paths.
Avoid deleting data as a first step
Do not repeatedly delete user data or reinstall every component as your first response. The handbook recommends keeping the Harness home directory when you change Node installations. Its statements about home-directory data are version-sensitive, so check current upstream documentation before running any command that removes Harness data.
Windows support boundaries
- Sandboxing is partial. The handbook describes a Windows sandbox built on a restricted token and NTFS ACLs. It calls the enforcement partial and says it does not provide complete read, network, or process isolation. Do not treat it as a full Windows security boundary.
- Some runtime paths target other platforms. The same handbook says the Python runtime wheel and the persistent PTY paths it reviewed target Linux and macOS rather than Windows. This is version-sensitive, so check the current official platform information before assuming Windows support for either path.
What “preview” means for Windows users
The official repository README states: “DeepSeek Harness is in developer preview and iterating rapidly. THERE WILL BE COMPATIBILITY-BREAKING CHANGES.” A setup that works today may need adjustment after an update, so keep your launch commands and versions written down.
