If you want to send a resource automatically when someone comments “LINK” on an Instagram post or Reel, OpenInstaDM is an open-source, self-hosted option to consider. It focuses on that comment-to-DM workflow; it is not a feature-for-feature replacement for a full marketing platform, and “free” refers to the code—not a guarantee that hosting and maintenance will cost nothing.
What OpenInstaDM does
OpenInstaDM is a project for Instagram creators who want to connect a keyword comment with a private message. A typical campaign is: configure a keyword such as LINK, publish a post inviting people to comment it, then send the matching commenters a resource or link. The project also describes an optional public reply to the comment. Anish’s article presents it as a focused alternative rather than an attempt to reproduce every capability of a large marketing platform.
The project says it uses Meta’s Instagram API and webhook flow. That is the project’s description; the available material does not independently audit API compliance or verify campaign behavior in operation.
How the comment-to-DM workflow is structured
- The creator creates a campaign and sets its matching keyword.
- When a comment event arrives, Meta sends it to the application through a webhook.
- The web application checks the event against configured campaigns and places matching work in a queue.
- A separate worker processes the queued job and sends the private reply. If enabled, it can also publish a public reply.
The project repository describes BullMQ with Redis for queued jobs and PostgreSQL and Redis shared by the web application and worker. The two processes have different jobs: the web application receives webhook events, while the worker sends messages. Both therefore need to be running for the described workflow to function.

What features the project lists
The repository describes the following capabilities. These are project-listed features, not independently verified test results:
- Keyword-based comment matching and optional public comment replies.
- Tracked links with click statistics, plus up to two link buttons.
- Username personalization and a follow gate.
- Multiple professional Instagram accounts, workspaces, and permissions.
- Campaign templates, an inbox, and delivery logs.
- Per-account rate limiting.
These additions may help creators or teams manage the core automation, but they do not establish that OpenInstaDM offers the broader set of marketing, messaging, or analytics tools available in a larger platform.

OpenInstaDM versus a hosted ManyChat-style service
| Consideration | OpenInstaDM | Hosted marketing platform |
|---|---|---|
| Primary scope | Focused on Instagram comment-triggered messages, with optional public replies. | May cover a wider range of marketing workflows; the sources here do not establish a feature-by-feature comparison. |
| Control | Open-source code can be inspected and customized; the user operates the deployment. | The provider operates the service; access to implementation and customization depends on that service. |
| Setup and upkeep | Requires Meta developer configuration and a running web app, worker, database, and queue. | Typically avoids running this project’s infrastructure yourself; exact requirements depend on the service. |
| Cost certainty | The code is described as free, but hosting and ongoing operation may incur costs. | Current plans and prices are not established by the sources cited here. |
As Anish, the article author, puts it: “The point isn’t to compete with every feature of a large marketing platform.” Choose OpenInstaDM if control over a focused workflow and the option to self-host matter more than a managed, broad feature set. A hosted service may be a better fit if you do not want to configure and maintain application infrastructure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat you need before self-hosting
The repository lists these prerequisites:
- An Instagram Business or Creator account.
- A Meta developer app and the required API configuration and permissions.
- Infrastructure for the web application and its separate worker.
- PostgreSQL and Redis for the application data and job queue.
The repository’s quick-start guidance names Vercel and Railway, and its stack notes mention other infrastructure options. Those are deployment suggestions, not a promise of free or fully managed operation. Meta app configuration is identified by the project as the more time-consuming setup step.

Is it really free?
The project’s code is open source, but running it has an operational cost. A provider may offer free-tier resources, yet availability, limits, and terms can change; the project materials do not guarantee that a complete deployment will remain free. You are also responsible for keeping the application, worker, database, and queue available and maintained. The repository mentions a private-reply rate figure, but it has not been verified here against current Meta documentation, so it should not be treated as an established current platform limit.
Who should choose it?
It may suit you if
- Your main need is to deliver a link or resource after a keyword comment.
- You are comfortable configuring a Meta developer app and operating a self-hosted application.
- You value access to open-source code and are prepared to handle deployment and maintenance.
Look elsewhere if
- You need a managed service and do not want to run a worker, database, or queue.
- You need a verified, complete comparison of broader marketing-platform features before choosing.
- You require proven delivery, conversion, reliability, or cost-savings results: the cited project materials do not establish those outcomes.
Bottom line
OpenInstaDM is a plausible free-code alternative for Instagram creators with a specific need: keyword-triggered comment-to-DM automation. Its self-hosted design gives you control, but also makes setup and ongoing operation your responsibility. Treat it as a focused project to evaluate—not a guaranteed zero-cost service or a drop-in replacement for every feature in a larger marketing platform.
