You can program some Verizon Fios remotes to control a Sony receiver, but the steps depend on the remote model. Use the Fios Voice Remote’s on-screen setup or, on a compatible Philips RC144, program the receiver under AUX. Verizon’s P265 remote does not directly control an audio receiver. Identify your remote before following a procedure.
Identify your Fios remote first
Look for the model label or compare the buttons on your remote. The Fios Voice Remote, Philips RC144, and P265 have different capabilities and setup methods; their instructions are not interchangeable. Verizon’s remote-control FAQs describe its remote families and replacement options.

Set up a Fios Voice Remote
These steps apply to a Fios Voice Remote used with Fios TV One or Fios TV One Mini. Menu labels can vary by software version; follow any prompts displayed on your television.

- Pair the remote with the Fios TV box if it is not already paired. Verizon’s instructions say to hold Play/Pause and 0 until the blue light flashes, then point the remote toward the box and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Try automatic setup: open Menu > Settings > Voice control > Fios TV Voice Remote > Program Voice Remote > Automatic Setup. Verizon says HDMI-connected TVs and audio systems should be detected after pairing. Look for the success message when setup completes.
- If automatic setup fails, use manual setup: open Menu > Settings > Voice control > Fios TV Voice Remote > Program Voice Remote > Manual Setup. Choose the receiver rather than only the TV, select Sony and the model if offered, and follow the prompts. A success message indicates setup has finished.
- Test volume, mute, and power separately. Aim the remote at the Sony system when testing infrared commands. The Voice Remote communicates with the set-top box wirelessly, but sends TV and AV commands by infrared or HDMI-CEC. Infrared requires line of sight; CEC requires HDMI-connected components with CEC enabled on each component.
Verizon’s Fios TV Voice Remote instructions cover setup and the infrared/CEC signal paths. Setup success does not establish that every receiver function will work.

Program a Philips RC144 using AUX
Use this procedure only if your remote is the Philips RC144 covered by Verizon’s guide and it has an AUX key. AUX can be used for an audio receiver or amplifier. The guide does not establish one universal Sony code, so use the code list that applies to your RC144 and exact Sony receiver model.
- Turn on the Sony receiver and find its code in the applicable receiver-code list.
- Press and hold AUX, then press OK while still holding AUX. Release both buttons. The device keys should blink twice.
- Enter the four-digit receiver code. The AUX key should blink three times. Point the remote at the receiver and press Power to test it.
- If the receiver does not respond, repeat the process with another code listed for that model.
- If the listed codes do not work, use the RC144 guide’s code-search procedure, substituting AUX for TV. The remote sends successive power-off commands; when the receiver turns off, press OK to store the code.
Route volume buttons to AUX in other modes
By default, the RC144’s VOL+, VOL−, and Mute buttons control the TV in STB or DVD modes, but control the AUX device while the remote is in AUX mode. To send volume commands to AUX from all modes, use this sequence:

- Hold STB, press OK, and release both.
- Enter 9-5-5.
- Press AUX to assign volume control to the receiver.
To restore TV volume control, repeat the sequence and press TV at the final step. The RC144 guide provides the code-search and volume-routing instructions.

If you have a P265 remote
Do not try to program the P265 as though it had the RC144’s AUX function. Verizon’s P265 manual says the remote controls the Fios TV set-top box and TV, not an audio receiver. Its TV Power, Volume, Mute, and A/V buttons control the TV. If the Sony system is connected to the TV by HDMI, check whether the TV and receiver support HDMI-CEC and whether CEC is enabled on both; that is separate from direct P265 receiver programming.

Troubleshoot receiver control
- Only the TV responds: On the Voice Remote, run setup again and select the receiver if the menu offers that choice. On the RC144, verify that the receiver was programmed under AUX and route volume to AUX if needed.
- Infrared commands do not work: Point the remote at the receiver without an obstruction and test from nearby. Infrared commands require line of sight.
- CEC control does not work: Confirm the TV and receiver are connected by HDMI and that CEC is enabled on each component. The setting name and location depend on the equipment.
- An RC144 code fails: Confirm that the code list is for the exact remote and Sony receiver model, then try another listed code or the documented AUX code search.
- You need an exact Sony code: First identify both the Fios remote model and the Sony receiver model. A code for a Sony TV remote is not a substitute for a Fios receiver code; Sony’s instructions distinguish TV programming from A/V receiver programming.
