To make an Xbox picture fit your TV, set the console to detect a supported display mode, then adjust the TV’s picture-size or screen-fit setting if the image is cropped or surrounded by borders. Resolution changes the signal the Xbox sends; the TV’s fit or overscan control determines how that signal maps to the screen.
Connect the Xbox and select its TV input
- Connect the Xbox’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI IN port on the TV.
- Turn on both devices and select that HDMI input from the TV’s Source menu. Samsung’s connection instructions use this setup sequence; the exact TV menu labels vary by model. Samsung’s Xbox and TV setup guide has model-specific guidance.
If you are aiming for 4K at 120 Hz, check the manual for your TV to identify which HDMI input supports it. Samsung notes that 4K/120 Hz support varies by model, so neither the console setting nor an HDMI cable alone guarantees that mode. Samsung UK’s Xbox connection guidance explains the model caveat.
Choose a display mode the TV supports
- On Xbox, open Settings and go to the display or video output options. Menu wording can change with the Xbox software version.
- In Video fidelity & overscan, use Auto-detect as the starting point where that option is available.
- Open Video modes and enable Allow 4K or Allow HDR only if your TV and the connected HDMI input support those modes.
Samsung’s setup guide describes these Xbox options for compatible configurations. Check Samsung’s instructions if you need the corresponding TV-side setup.

On applicable Samsung TVs, enable Input Signal Plus for the HDMI port connected to the Xbox. Some older Samsung models call this setting HDMI UHD Color. Fix a picture that is cropped or does not fill the screen
If edges of the Xbox picture are cut off, or the image is smaller than the TV screen, look in the TV’s picture settings for a control named Picture Size, Screen Fit, or an overscan-related option. Select the setting that shows the complete image without stretching it, if your TV offers one. The label and menu path differ by television, so consult the manual for your exact model.
Changing Xbox resolution changes the outgoing video signal; it is not a universal screen-scaling adjustment. The available guidance does not establish one Xbox-side scaling percentage or a single overscan procedure that applies to every TV. Xbox Support has a page titled “Change your TV display resolution”; its available instructions do not establish a universal scaling control.

Game Mode
If you want the TV’s gaming-oriented picture behavior, enable Game Mode in the TV settings when available. Samsung describes it as optimizing the screen for gaming, while noting that availability and menu paths vary by model or geographical area. Samsung’s support guide and its TV manual guidance describe its model-dependent setup.
When comparing a TV or HDMI input
Check the specifications for the exact TV model and HDMI port, rather than relying on a general label such as “4K TV.” Confirm that the combination supports the resolution, refresh rate, and HDR mode you want, and whether the port needs an enhanced-signal setting. Also check whether the TV offers a picture-size or overscan adjustment if screen fit is important.
