To update Adobe Acrobat Reader, open the app and choose Help > Check for updates. On Windows, open Help from Menu first. If Reader offers an update, install it and follow any prompts to close and reopen the app. Adobe also provides the full installer through its Reader Download Center.
Check for and install an update
On Windows
- Open Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Select Menu > Help > Check for updates.
- If an update is available, select Download.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. If prompted to quit Acrobat, close it and select Retry to finish installing.
- Close the success dialog when installation completes.
On macOS
- Open Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Select Help > Check for updates.
- If an update is available, select Yes.
- Select OK when the success dialog appears.
Adobe recommends using the in-app check or automatic updates when available. If you need to replace an installation or the in-app process is not working, download the full installer from Adobe’s Reader Download Center. On a work or school computer, check with your administrator before replacing Reader; organizational update policies may control which installer or version you can use.
How to tell whether Reader is up to date
Run Help > Check for updates (on Windows, through Menu). If Reader finds an update, install it. If it does not offer one, the app has no update available through that check at that time. Version numbers differ by platform and product track, so a number shown in an older article or bulletin is not a reliable indicator of the current build. For current version information, consult Adobe’s Acrobat and Reader release notes or security bulletins.
Automatic updates and their settings
Adobe says Reader is set up for automatic updates by default. The controls are not identical across platforms and product contexts: Adobe’s Reader-specific guidance says there is no preferences option to change that default, while its broader desktop preferences documentation describes updater controls. On Windows, that page lists Menu > Preferences > Updater, including an option to stop automatic installation; on macOS, it lists Acrobat > Preferences > Updater, including an option to turn automatic installation on. The setting you see can depend on the product and installation, so use the manual check when you want to verify updates directly. See Adobe’s Reader update instructions and desktop updater preferences.

Why updating Reader matters
Updates can include security fixes as well as product changes. In its March 10, 2026 security bulletin for Acrobat and Reader on Windows and macOS, Adobe said the addressed vulnerabilities could, if successfully exploited, lead to arbitrary code execution and privilege escalation. Adobe also said it was not aware of in-the-wild exploits for the issues covered by that bulletin. That release is one example of why timely updates matter; it does not describe every update or establish the current threat status. Check Adobe’s March 2026 security bulletin and current bulletins for release-specific details.
What to do if Reader will not update
- Follow restart or retry prompts. If the installer asks you to close Acrobat, quit Reader and select Retry so installation can continue.
- Consider whether the device is managed. System policy can block updates, automatic patched updates may be disabled, and installations based on an Administrative Install Point may not support automatic updating.
- For a personal computer, reinstall if needed. Adobe’s Windows troubleshooting guidance suggests uninstalling Reader, installing the latest supported version, then reopening Reader and checking for updates. Use Adobe’s official Reader Download Center.
- For an organization-managed computer, contact the administrator. The update may be controlled by the organization rather than by your local Reader settings.

A certificate-trust prompt is not a Reader update
An Adobe Approved Trust List (AATL) prompt updates certificates trusted for digitally signed PDFs; it is separate from updating the Reader application. You can accept the prompted security-settings update, or later manage trust settings under Preferences > Trust Manager. See Adobe’s Approved Trust List information.
