Navidrome lets you stream music files you already own or have permission to use from a personal server, using a web browser or a compatible music app. It offers a Spotify-like way to access your own library—not Spotify’s licensed catalog, and it does not supply music.
What Navidrome does—and what it doesn’t
Navidrome is open-source, web-based music server software. You point it to a collection of audio files on a computer or server; it scans the files and makes the library available through its web interface and compatible players. The project describes it as “like your personal Spotify,” referring to the listening convenience, not a subscription streaming catalog. See the Navidrome project repository.
Its documented features include metadata-based browsing, playlists, multiple user accounts, multiple libraries with user-specific access, sharing links, scrobbling, jukebox mode, and on-the-fly transcoding. These are server features; what you see or can do in a third-party player depends on that app.
What you need to get started
- A music library: Navidrome serves files in a folder you configure. It does not provide tracks or replace a music subscription.
- A host that can stay available: Navidrome supports Linux, Windows, and macOS, as well as Docker and Raspberry Pi/ARM installation routes. A dedicated Raspberry Pi is optional; an existing compatible computer or server may be enough. The official installation guide covers binaries and platform instructions.
- ffmpeg: The installation documentation identifies ffmpeg as a requirement for Navidrome to work properly. Follow the instructions for your platform.
- Storage and permissions: The Navidrome process needs to read the music library and write to its data directory. The exact paths and ownership depend on your host and installation method.
- A listening device: Use the web interface or choose a compatible Subsonic/OpenSubsonic client from the official overview and apps catalog.
How to set up Navidrome
The exact installation differs by platform, but the first-run flow is straightforward. The official getting-started guide uses port 4533 as its default example; a customized installation may use a different port.

- Install and start Navidrome. Choose the documented binary or container route for your host, and install ffmpeg as directed for that platform.
- Set the music and data locations. Configure the folder containing your audio files and the directory where Navidrome can store its data. Check that the service can read the music and write its data.
- Make the service reachable. For an initial connection on the same network, use the host and port configured for Navidrome. Remote access requires an appropriate network setup; do not expose a service publicly without considering the security guidance below.
- Open the web interface and create the administrator account. Use the address for your host and port. The default example in the official guide is port 4533.
- Wait for the library scan. Navidrome indexes the configured collection. A larger library can take longer; the guide’s scan-time estimates are not performance guarantees.
- Play a track, then connect other devices. Confirm playback in the browser, then configure a compatible app with your server details and account.
If you use Docker
The official Docker example mounts the host’s music directory at /music and its persistent data directory at /data. The container needs read access to the music mount and read/write access to the data mount. Set the user ID and group ID to values appropriate for the host’s file ownership; the example is not a universal copy-and-paste configuration. The Docker guide specifically warns against removing the user setting as a shortcut, because the container would then run as root. Consult the Docker installation guide and adapt paths and permissions to your system.
Listen in a browser or a compatible app
The web interface is one way to browse and play your collection. For phones, desktops, and other devices, Navidrome supports third-party players that connect through the Subsonic/OpenSubsonic API. The official apps catalog lists options across platforms; client availability and features can change, so check the catalog rather than relying on an old app recommendation.

Compatibility does not mean every player offers the same experience. Offline caching, car integrations, interface design, and any app charge are client-specific. Check those details in the app’s current listing before choosing one.
How Navidrome organizes your music
Tags and metadata shape how your library appears. Navidrome’s folder-style view is simulated from tags rather than a direct browser of the underlying filesystem; the hierarchy can resemble Album Artist / Album / track. If artist, album, or track tags are missing or inconsistent, browsing may be less useful until you clean up the metadata.

The documented library features also include playlists, including importing and synchronizing .m3u playlists, separate user activity and playlists, and access controls for multiple libraries. Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you control over the host, files, configuration, and network setup, but you are responsible for keeping the server running, maintaining it, and arranging backups. Managed hosting reduces the server-administration work, but provider terms, regions, backup policies, and costs should be checked directly. Navidrome’s managed-hosting page lists PikaPods and Zenith as supported one-click hosting options. Their current offers may change.

The right self-hosting option depends on hardware you already own, desired uptime, collection size, available storage, power use, and comfort with maintenance. The official documentation describes supported platforms and low-resource operation, but does not establish comparative benchmarks or a recommended hardware specification.
Security and remote access
A server reachable from outside your home needs more care than one used only on a local network. Navidrome’s security guidance recommends not running the service as root and suggests considering a reverse proxy with SSL for network-accessible use. Review the official security documentation before setting up public access, particularly if you use external authentication; proxy trust and which endpoints are exposed matter.

Keep the server and host maintained, restrict access to the people who need it, and understand where your library and Navidrome data are stored. Managed hosting changes who operates the server, but you should still review the provider’s security, data, and backup terms.
