To sync separate audio and video clips in Premiere Pro, place them in the Timeline panel, select them, and choose Clip > Synchronize. Choose a reference both clips share—such as timecode, an In or Out point, a clip marker, or an audio track channel—then check the alignment in the Timeline. For reusable source media, use Merge Clips; for multiple camera angles, create a Multi-Camera Source Sequence.
Sync separate audio and video clips in the timeline
Use Synchronize when the camera video and separately recorded audio are already in a sequence and you want to align those timeline clips. Adobe lists these references in its timeline synchronization guidance:
- Clip Start / In point: Align the clips’ In points, also described as their starts.
- Clip End / Out point: Align the clips’ Out points, or ends.
- Timecode: Align clips that share timecode.
- Clip Marker: Align the corresponding numbered marker in each clip.
- Audio track channel: Use a selected audio channel as the reference. This is a channel-based option; it is not a general waveform-sync command.
- Add the camera clip and separate audio clip to the Timeline panel.
- Select the clips to align.
- Choose Clip > Synchronize.
- Choose the reference that matches information present in both clips, then confirm the operation.
- Inspect the result at the sync point and later in the recording. If there is no common automatic reference, align the clips manually in the timeline.
Choose a reference based on the media, not on which option sounds most automatic. For example, matching In points only works if the clips’ In points represent the same event. If your files have no shared timecode, markers, or useful matching point, manual alignment is the fallback Adobe documents.
Choose the right Premiere sync workflow
| Situation | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Audio and video are already in a sequence | Clip > Synchronize | Aligns selected timeline clips using a chosen reference. |
| You want separately recorded sound and camera video represented as a merged source clip | Clip > Merge Clips | Creates a merged clip from video and one or more audio clips; the originals remain intact. |
| You need to coordinate multiple camera angles | Clip > Create Multi-Camera Source Sequence | Creates a multicamera source sequence using a selected sync method and audio behavior. |
Create a merged clip for separate production audio
Merge Clips is useful when you want a reusable clip that brings camera video and separately recorded audio together, rather than simply aligning clips already in a sequence. Select the video and audio in the Project panel or Timeline, then choose Clip > Merge Clips. Adobe’s Merge Clips overview documents support for one video or AV clip with one or more audio clips, up to 16 audio tracks total. For that limit, mono counts as one track, stereo as two, and 5.1 as six.

Adobe states: “Creating a merged clip does not replace or alter the source clips.” The merged item is therefore not a destructive replacement for your original media.
Use audio timecode as the merge reference
If the primary audio clip carries the timecode you want to use, Adobe’s audio-timecode merge instructions describe selecting the video and primary audio clip, choosing Clip > Merge Clips, enabling Use Audio Timecode From Clip, and selecting the audio track. The dialog also includes Remove Audio from AV Clip for removing camera audio from the resulting merged workflow when desired.

- Built for video editors: Premiere Pro's most-used commands come pre-mapped one per key, named and color-coded so you can scan quickly while you cut.
- Remap anything in KeyStudio, the browser-based remapping tool we built for Dash keyboard. Nothing to install, and the layout saves onto the keyboard so it works the same on every machine you use.
- 20 spare shortcut keycaps in the box: move the keys to match the way you actually cut and grade, rather than learning someone else's layout.
- The compact, low-profile design frees desk space and keeps your mouse within reach for better posture. Winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award in 2025 and designed in Vancouver, Canada. We've been building tools for creative work since 2009, and every Dash comes a 12 month warranty.
- Tri-mode connection across Mac, PC, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Linux: Bluetooth for three devices, 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired, on a 3500mAh battery good for 450 hours.
Sync multiple cameras with a Multi-Camera Source Sequence
For a shoot with multiple camera angles, select the camera clips in the Project panel and choose Clip > Create Multi-Camera Source Sequence. Adobe’s multicamera source-sequence guide lists In/Out Points, Timecode, Audio, and Clip Marker as synchronization methods. Timecode options include Linear Timecode, Sound Timecode, and Aux Timecode. The Audio method can be useful when the clips contain a consistent shared sound, such as a clapboard or voiceover.

- Camera 1: Uses audio from Camera 1.
- All Cameras: Retains audio from all cameras.
- Switch Audio: Allows audio to switch with linked video when audio-follows-video is enabled.
Separately recorded audio can also be included. For an audio-only clip, the documented Offset Audio by setting accepts an adjustment from -100 to +100 video frames. Work out the needed adjustment by checking the sync in the recording; the range is a product setting, not a recommended offset.

Prepare a reliable sync reference while recording
If all clips have identical jam-synced timecode, Adobe says additional sync markers are unnecessary. If they do not, record or mark an event that appears in each relevant clip. Adobe’s guidance on preparing multicamera sync references gives examples:
- Use an In point at a slate clap.
- Use an Out point at a tail slate.
- Place identically named clip markers at the same event.
- Use a distinct shared cue, such as an audio cue, cymbal crash, or camera flash.
A slate clap is one option for future recordings, not a requirement for syncing existing footage. Adobe identifies the clap as a potential sync cue in its slate and clapboard guidance.
