You can shorten a video while keeping its source intact. The key choice is whether to save only a reversible edit in a project, or create a separate shortened video file. A project-based editor is best when you may revise the cut; a lossless cutter or FFmpeg stream copy can make a new file without another encode when the cut boundaries and format allow it. Re-encoding a separate export offers more flexibility for effects and difficult cuts, but encoding settings affect its quality and size.
First, decide what “without touching the original” means
There are two useful interpretations. You can preserve the full source and record a trim as an edit decision in a project, or leave the source file unchanged while writing a shorter, separate output. The first keeps the edit reversible inside the project; the second gives you a standalone clip to share or use elsewhere.
In either case, save the result under a different filename or in a different location. If the footage matters, keep a separate backup as well.

1. Keep the trim in a non-destructive editor project
In Final Cut Pro, clips refer to source files. Trimming or deleting a portion changes project information, while the unused portions remain in the library and source media. Apple’s Final Cut Pro User Guide explains that the underlying media is not touched by edits.

This is the clearest choice when you may change your mind, combine several clips, or add transitions and effects. The project preserves your edit decisions; a finished video still needs to be rendered or exported separately.
2. Use a GUI lossless cutter to save a separate clip
A graphical cutter is convenient when the job is mainly selecting ranges to keep or remove. LosslessCut describes cutting and rearranging video and audio using near-direct data copy, and it can save cut segments in a project file.

“Lossless” does not guarantee a frame-exact cut for every encoding. Inter-coded video may depend on earlier packets or keyframes for correct decoding, and LosslessCut identifies smart cut as experimental. If a boundary matters, check playback just before and after each cut in the saved output.
3. Use FFmpeg stream copy for a new file
FFmpeg’s -c copy option copies encoded packets instead of decoding and encoding them. Its stream-copy documentation says this is very fast and avoids quality loss from re-encoding. This describes stream copy specifically; it does not mean every trim or export is lossless.

Packet copying has limits. The destination container may not support the source streams, and filters cannot be applied to packets that are being copied. Inter-frame dependencies can also affect where a cut works cleanly. Consult FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation for the option’s behavior and limitations.
Choose this route when you are comfortable with a command line and need a quick, repeatable trim or remux. Keep the input and output paths distinct, then inspect the cut points in the resulting file.

4. Re-encode a separate export when you need more flexibility
A re-encoded export decodes the source, applies edits or filters, and encodes a new file. Because it can process the video rather than simply copy packets, it is suitable for effects, format conversion, or a cut boundary that packet-copy methods cannot handle acceptably.

Choose a workflow and recover from common problems
- You may revise the trim: use a project-based editor and retain the source media.
- You want a simple visual cut: try a GUI cutter, save a separate file, and check the cut points.
- You need a quick or repeatable cut: try stream copy if packet boundaries and container compatibility are sufficient.
- A cut is misplaced, playback breaks, or the container rejects the streams: use a decoded, re-encoded export or return to a timeline editor.
- You need a filter or effect: choose a workflow that decodes and processes the footage; stream copy cannot apply filters.
- The footage is valuable: keep a separate backup rather than relying on a single project or output file.
There is no universal best method: the right choice depends on whether you need a reversible edit, a quick separate clip, or more control over the rendered result.
