To install League of Legends in a different location, use Riot’s uninstall-and-reinstall process and follow the destination options the installer actually displays. Riot’s published instructions explain how to find the current game folder, but they do not document a supported direct move of an existing folder or confirm that every current installer offers a custom-location picker. Don’t assume dragging the folder to another drive will work.
Find your current League of Legends folder
Finding the existing folder is different from changing where the game is installed. Riot provides these steps for locating the installation, including when its updated-client installer cannot detect the current location.
Windows
- Right-click the League of Legends desktop shortcut and select Open File Location.
- Copy the folder path shown. If Riot’s installer asks you to identify the existing installation, enter or browse to that path.
If you do not have a desktop shortcut, find lol.launcher.exe in File Explorer. Windows may display the filename as lol.launcher. Right-click it, open Properties, and copy its folder location.

Mac
When prompted to locate the game, browse to League of Legends.app and open it. Riot’s directions are in its updated-client installation guidance.
Install League of Legends in a different location
Riot’s updated-client guidance says the client shares files with the existing League installation and must be installed in the same location. That instruction is about installing the updated client alongside the existing game, not moving the game to a new drive. Riot’s published uninstall-and-reinstall article describes a fresh installation, but does not establish that the current installer always provides a custom destination control.

- Save files you want to keep. Riot notes that replays may be in
DocumentsLeague of Legendsand can be copied elsewhere before deletion. - Uninstall the game. On Windows, open Installed apps in Settings and uninstall League of Legends. On Mac, remove
League of Legends.app, empty Trash, and restart. - Download the installer from Riot’s game download flow and run it. On Mac, use the Mac installer.
- Follow the installer’s displayed prompts. If it offers a destination choice, select the folder you want. If it does not, Riot’s cited instructions do not specify another supported way to choose a custom path; do not assume the install location can be changed through a particular control.

Can you move the game folder without reinstalling?
Riot’s cited guidance does not confirm that cutting and pasting the existing folder to another drive, then relinking it in the client, is supported. It also does not establish that changing the Riot Client’s own location changes the League of Legends game location. If you need a dependable, documented approach, use Riot’s uninstall-and-reinstall process rather than treating a manual folder move as an official method.
