To get karma on Reddit, make useful, original contributions in communities you care about and follow each community’s rules. Karma roughly reflects how other users vote on your posts and comments, but votes do not convert to karma one for one, and no tactic guarantees a particular score or posting access. Reddit’s advice is: “Don’t set out to accumulate karma; just set out to be a good contributor, and let your karma simply be a reflection of your legacy.” (Reddit Help: What is karma?)

How karma works—and why there is no guaranteed target

Reddit karma is a rough reflection of upvotes and downvotes on your posts and comments. It is not a one-to-one tally of votes, so you cannot calculate how much karma a contribution will earn or how long it will take. Reddit does not publish a universal karma target that guarantees posting access; communities can set different eligibility requirements. (Reddit Help: What is karma?)

If Reddit says you are not eligible to post, use the Poster Eligibility Guide & Post Check to see which criteria you meet or do not meet. Depending on the community, criteria can include post karma, comment karma, combined karma, community-specific karma, account age, and email verification. These are not uniform requirements across Reddit.

8 ways to build karma through good participation

1. Choose communities you genuinely care about

Participate where you have a real interest in the subject. You are more likely to understand what belongs in the conversation and to offer something relevant. Reddit recommends contributing in communities of interest rather than treating karma as a score to chase. (Reddit Help: What is karma?)

2. Read the rules before you contribute

Community rules can define allowed topics, post formats, and other local expectations. Check the rules and any posting guidance before submitting; a contribution that violates them may be removed even if it is well intentioned. (What are Reddit’s rules?; How do I post and comment on Reddit?)

3. Start by commenting thoughtfully

Commenting can be a lower-stakes way to join an existing discussion and learn a community’s norms. Reddit says even a small amount of karma earned by commenting in a community can help users get past some filters. That may help in some cases, but it is not a universal bypass or guarantee. (Reddit Help: How do I post and comment on Reddit?)

4. Make comments useful to the conversation

Address the question, add relevant context, or share a clear personal perspective when it fits. A comment that contributes something specific gives readers a reason to respond or upvote; no particular wording or style guarantees votes.

5. Submit original, on-topic posts

Before posting, check that the subject belongs in the community and that the format follows its guidance. Reddit recommends authentic contributions in communities where you have a personal interest. Originality and relevance are better foundations than reposting something simply because it once attracted attention. (Reddit Help: How do I post and comment on Reddit?; Reddit Help: Spam)

6. Respect posting and commenting limits

Reddit limits how often people can post or comment in a community to help prevent spam. New users, or users new to a sensitive community, may see “You’re doing that too much.” Wait rather than trying to work around the restriction by posting repeatedly. (How do I post and comment on Reddit?; Why am I being told, ‘You’re doing that too much…’?)

7. Avoid repetitive, recycled, or self-promotional posting

Repeated similar comments, unrelated link-farmed content, or repeatedly sharing old posts to gain karma quickly can be treated as spam. Some communities also limit self-promotion. The often-mentioned “10% rule” is a practice some communities use, not a Reddit-wide requirement; follow the specific community’s rules and moderator guidance. (Reddit Help: Spam; How do I keep spam out of my community?)

8. Never manipulate votes or automate karma

Do not use vote exchanges, multiple accounts to boost votes, bots, or other artificial engagement. Reddit prohibits vote cheating and automated attempts to manipulate karma; this behavior can lead to content removal or account enforcement. (Reddit Help: Disrupting Communities; Reddit Help: Spam)

Should you comment or make a post?

Choose the format that best fits the community’s rules and the contribution you can make. A comment is often a natural fit when you can add something useful to an existing discussion; a post makes sense when you have an original topic that belongs in the community. Check eligibility requirements before either one. Neither format has a dependable karma yield. (Reddit Help: How do I post and comment on Reddit?; Poster Eligibility Guide & Post Check)

What not to expect from karma shortcuts

Reddit Premium does not bypass the spam filter, so it is not a shortcut to posting eligibility or karma. More broadly, fast, repetitive engagement can undermine the quality of a contribution and may be treated as spam rather than a legitimate way to participate.
