For most Windows users, leave Memory integrity on. It adds a layer of protection around code running with deep system privileges. Some drivers and applications can conflict with it, and performance impact varies by hardware; if something breaks, try updating the specific driver or app before considering turning protection off.
What Windows Memory integrity does
Memory integrity, also called Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity (HVCI), is part of virtualization-based security (VBS). Windows uses its hypervisor to create an isolated environment where Memory integrity performs kernel-mode code-integrity checks. Microsoft says it restricts kernel memory allocations that could be used to compromise the system. Its technical documentation explains that kernel memory pages must pass code-integrity checks before they can become executable, and executable pages cannot be writable. It also protects components such as the kernel-mode Control Flow Guard bitmap and the code-integrity process that checks trusted kernel processes. See Microsoft’s VBS and Memory integrity documentation and technical guidance on enabling code-integrity protection.
In practical terms, it adds a barrier around code with powerful system privileges. Turning it off removes that particular barrier; it does not automatically disable every other Windows security feature. Memory integrity is not antivirus or a complete defense against every attack on the kernel.

Why users turn it off
Driver and application compatibility
Compatibility is the clearest documented reason. Some hardware drivers and applications may not work with Memory integrity, potentially causing a malfunction and, rarely, a boot failure or blue screen. Microsoft cites observed conflicts involving gaming anti-cheat software, third-party input methods, and third-party banking password-protection software. These are examples, not evidence that all games, keyboards, or banking apps are affected; the outcome depends on the specific software and version.

If Windows reports “A driver can’t load on this device,” Memory integrity may be preventing that driver from loading. Microsoft says a blocked driver may have a minor vulnerability and is most likely not malicious, but the warning is still a reason to identify the exact driver and look for a compatible update—not to bypass the protection without considering the tradeoff. See Microsoft Support’s explanation of the driver warning.
Performance concerns
The performance effect depends on the PC. Microsoft says older processors may rely on an emulation called Restricted User Mode and may experience a bigger impact. The feature works better on Intel Kaby Lake and later processors with Mode-Based Execution Control, and AMD Zen 2 and later processors with Guest Mode Execute Trap. Microsoft’s cited material does not give a universal slowdown percentage or FPS result, so disabling Memory integrity is not a guaranteed performance improvement.

What to do when a driver or app stops working
- Identify what failed. Note the driver, device, or application and whether the issue began after a particular update or settings change.
- Look for a compatible update. Check Windows Update or the device manufacturer for a newer driver. For an application conflict, check for an update to that specific application and version. Microsoft recommends checking for updates before switching protection off; see its driver troubleshooting guidance and driver compatibility guidance.
- Test with protection on. Install the vendor’s fix, then confirm whether the device or app works while Memory integrity remains enabled.
- Use disabling as a fallback. Consider turning it off only if the compatibility problem remains and restoring that specific function matters enough to accept losing this protection layer. Microsoft says that on a Secured-core PC, turning Memory integrity off takes the device out of Secured-core status. The Windows Security toggle change requires a restart to take effect.
If enabling the feature causes a critical boot problem or system instability, Microsoft documents recovery steps through the Windows Recovery Environment. Systems configured with UEFI lock may require disabling Secure Boot to complete recovery. That is an emergency recovery path, not a routine first troubleshooting step.

Memory integrity and Microsoft’s vulnerable driver blocklist are related, but they are not the same feature. The blocklist is intended to balance known driver security risks with compatibility and reliability, and Microsoft says it is not guaranteed to block every vulnerable driver. Since the Windows 11 2022 update, Microsoft says the blocklist is enabled by default for all devices and enforced when Memory integrity is active, with a Windows Server 2016 exception. See Microsoft’s vulnerable driver blocklist documentation.

Either feature can affect whether a driver loads. A warning does not prove that the driver is malware, nor does it mean Windows blocks every old driver. Identify the specific driver and seek a patched, compatible version before deciding whether to change a security setting.

| Option | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Memory integrity on and update or replace the driver or app | A compatible version may be available, or the affected function can wait while you check with the vendor. | Preserves the additional kernel-protection layer; the update may resolve the compatibility problem. |
| Turn Memory integrity off | A specific compatibility problem remains, and restoring that function is important enough to accept the security trade-off. | Removes this protection layer; on a Secured-core PC, the device loses Secured-core status. |
For most users, the first option is the better starting point. Performance should be judged on the individual PC rather than assumed to improve by disabling the setting.
