Some 2026 base Kindle owners have reported a glow around the screen’s edges, especially when reading in Dark Mode at maximum brightness in a dark room. Amazon says that glow is expected under those conditions as part of the colored-bezel design and recommends lowering brightness. A report also relays earlier advice to exchange devices with severe light bleed, but the available information does not establish a universal replacement policy.
What Amazon says about the 2026 Kindle edge glow
In an October 9, 2026 update, Android Authority quoted an Amazon spokesperson saying customers may see a glow around the edges of the book when the device is in Dark Mode, brightness is at maximum, and the room is dark. Amazon characterized it as expected in certain conditions in order to achieve a color bezel, and recommended trying a lower brightness setting in Dark Mode to mitigate it.
The same report separately relays earlier claims that Amazon acknowledged a problem in some batches and that users with severe light bleed were advised to exchange their devices. That exchange guidance is not the same as the updated statement about glow under specific conditions. The sources do not confirm a formal replacement policy or say who qualifies, how quickly a replacement would be provided, or whether the reported guidance applies in every market.

Amazon lists two distinct 2026 models: the standard Kindle and a separately identified aluminum Kindle. The standard model has 16 GB of storage; the aluminum model has 32 GB. Amazon’s UK help page lists the standard 2026 Kindle as a 6-inch, 300 ppi glare-free E Ink reader, with up to six weeks of battery life. These model details help identify the device discussed in reports, but they do not show that one model or finish is more or less likely to exhibit edge glow.

| 2026 model | Storage | Housing | US launch price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Kindle | 16 GB | Not specified in the cited launch details | Starting at $149.99, per Amazon’s October 1, 2026 US launch announcement |

Prices in Amazon’s October 1, 2026 launch announcement are US launch figures, not guaranteed current prices or prices in other markets. Amazon describes a redesigned reverse-stack display construction and flush-front screen across the new Kindle family, including a rethink of how the base model’s display, front light, and touch layers are assembled and bonded. The available sources do not establish that this design caused the reported glow.
Try a lower brightness before judging the effect
Amazon’s help page explains how to adjust the screen light, but it does not diagnose a defective display. To see whether the glow changes under the conditions Amazon described:

- Open Quick Actions or go to Settings on your Kindle.
- Use the brightness scale or buttons to lower the screen brightness.
- If your device supports it, open the screen-light controls and switch Dark Mode off, or compare the screen at a lower brightness in Dark Mode.
Amazon’s screen-light instructions cover brightness and Dark Mode controls. If the glow diminishes when brightness is lowered or Dark Mode is off, that is consistent with Amazon’s description of when it may appear; it does not, by itself, prove that the device is free of a defect.
When to contact the seller or request an exchange
If the edge effect is severe, remains concerning after you try lower brightness, or interferes with reading, contact the seller or Amazon support and describe what you see. The Android Authority report relays exchange advice for severe cases, but Amazon’s quoted update does not set out a general replacement offer. Ask support to assess your individual device and confirm any available remedy, eligibility, and timing for your purchase and location.

Owner posts, including an October 8 discussion titled “Light bleeding in new basic 2026,” show that some users have noticed the effect and asked whether it is normal or warrants an exchange. Those individual accounts do not establish how widespread the issue is, and the available sources do not support a defect-rate estimate or a reliable comparison between model colors.
