There is no verified “15 gadgets cybersecurity pros actually use” list: the available product evidence does not establish how common any device is among practitioners. Hak5’s current catalog does document several physical tools marketed for authorized security assessments, including wireless-auditing equipment, USB test devices and a LAN tap. Which tool belongs in a kit depends on the engagement’s written scope, objective and access—not on a universal professional standard.
What counts as a cybersecurity gadget?
“Hacking gadget” is a loose label, not a technical category. In an authorized assessment, physical tools can help examine wireless security, endpoint behavior, network access or interfaces. They do not replace a defined test plan, permission from the system owner or the operator’s judgment.
Hak5 describes its catalog as pentest gear and frames use around authorized auditing and security analysis where permitted. Its catalog verifies that the products below are offered by the manufacturer; it is not a survey of what professionals use, and it does not show how prevalent any model is. See Hak5’s current catalog.

| Device | Assessment area | What the available product information supports |
|---|---|---|
| WiFi Pineapple Enterprise | Wireless auditing | Hak5 describes a web interface, automated and passive assessment workflows, reporting, and a Linux core accessible by SSH or web shell. It also describes hardware-address and access-point-name filters for scope control. The page lists multiple radios and wired connections. |
| WiFi Pineapple Pager | Portable wireless and payload workflows | Hak5 describes a standalone portable Linux device that runs DuckyScript payloads. Its listed specifications include tri-band 2.4/5/6 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and BTLE, a 2,000 mAh battery and USB-C charging. |
| USB Rubber Ducky | Authorized endpoint and USB-policy assessment | Hak5 lists it as a pentest device. It is appropriate to understand it as a USB keystroke-injection tester for controlled endpoint or security-policy assessments. The available evidence does not verify retail availability through any particular marketplace. |
| Bash Bunny | Physical-access and USB assessment | Hak5 names it in its pentest catalog. The available product information here is not sufficient to substantiate model-specific performance claims. |
| Shark Jack | Network-access assessment | Hak5 names it in its pentest catalog. The available product information here is not sufficient to substantiate model-specific performance claims. |
| O.MG devices | Cable and adapter security | Hak5’s catalog includes an O.MG cable/adapter collection and a malicious-cable detector. These category-level descriptions do not support more detailed capability claims. |
| Plunder Bug LAN Tap | Wired network visibility | Hak5 identifies it as a LAN tap. No further technical claims are established by the available product information. |
How to choose a tool for an assessment
Start with the question the engagement is meant to answer. A wireless-auditing platform, a USB keystroke-injection tester and a LAN tap address different environments and require different access. Compare tools against the authorized scope rather than treating them as interchangeable kit items.
- Assessment goal: Identify whether the work concerns wireless configuration, endpoint or USB policy, network access, or cable/interface security.
- Access and deployment: Confirm what physical access and placement the written scope allows. Do not introduce a device to a network or endpoint without explicit authorization.
- Interfaces and compatibility: Check the manufacturer’s current documentation for the radios, ports and interfaces relevant to the target environment. Detailed comparison evidence is available here only for the WiFi Pineapple family.
- Scope controls and auditability: For WiFi Pineapple Enterprise, Hak5 describes filters based on hardware addresses and access-point names, alongside assessment workflows and reporting. These are manufacturer-described features, not independent validation that a deployment is automatically in scope.
- Portability and workflow: Decide whether the test needs a standalone portable device or a tool operated through a web interface, SSH or another documented workflow. Hak5 describes the Pager as standalone and Linux-based; verify current documentation for other models.
- Operator skill and documentation: Choose a tool the assessor can configure, monitor and explain in the final report. A device’s presence in a catalog does not establish that it is appropriate for a particular test.
Keep physical testing authorized and controlled
Physical-access and keystroke-injection tools can affect real systems. Use them only in a lab or in an assessment covered by clear written permission, defined targets, permitted methods and agreed operating conditions. If the scope does not explicitly allow a device or technique, leave it out and obtain clarification before testing.

Hak5’s product descriptions can help identify what the company says its equipment is designed to do, but they are not independent demonstrations of effectiveness. Confirm current specifications and operating requirements in the manufacturer’s documentation, and document what was tested and under what authorization.
