Rust is a compact, square Core multiplayer map in Modern Warfare III’s Urzikstan oilfields, built around a central Tower. The Tower gives players elevated sight lines, but winning objective modes depends on moving through the ground-level routes, using cover, and contesting objectives rather than simply holding the top. Activision’s official Rust map guide identifies the key areas and offers guidance for each mode.
How Rust is laid out
Activision describes Rust as a small, square map dominated by a central Tower. The guide names Pipe and Trucks as spawn areas, with Oil Pump and Office Buildings as other landmarks. Use those names to orient yourself and give teammates concise callouts. The map is set in the Urzikstan desert oilfields, as also described in Activision’s launch communications on Modern Warfare III maps and modes.

The Tower and the ground routes
The Tower’s height creates long sight lines across the open center, making its top a powerful position. It is also exposed and not a substitute for controlling the rest of the map. The bulky Tower base and crawl spaces around it offer ways to break sight lines and move through the center with more protection. When a player above pins you down, look for cover and a route beneath or around the structure rather than crossing open ground unnecessarily.
Other useful positions
The southwest Oil Pump provides an alternate elevated view if the Tower is contested. Activision’s map guide recommends dropping beneath the Oil Pump when the Tower threatens your position, and suggests holding near Blue Containers, Trucks, or under the Pipe when a slower, more controlled approach makes sense. These are options, not guaranteed safe positions: check the immediate sight lines and objective before settling in.

How to move around the Tower safely
- Crossing open ground: The official Intel Card recommends using Battle Rage when crossing exposed areas. Treat this as publisher advice, not a guarantee that the crossing will be safe.
- Passing the base: Crouch through the crawl spaces at the Tower’s base to use the lower route.
- Under sniper pressure: If a Tower player has you pinned, sprint to larger cover when you have an opening instead of remaining exposed.
- Fighting on the ladder: A handgun or melee secondary can be useful against an enemy challenging you at close range on the Tower ladder.
- Changing position: Use the underside of structures and available cover to break sight and reposition, rather than repeatedly challenging the same exposed angle.
Rust strategies by game mode
Domination
Domination has three flags, all at ground level around the Tower. Capture timing and routes through the Tower foundation matter more than winning a prolonged fight on top. A teammate in the Tower can support players below, but do not let Tower combat pull the team away from the flags.
Hardpoint
Hardpoint uses five points; four are at ground level, while the second point is elevated over the Oil Pump. Expect grenade pressure around the inner three points, according to Activision’s guide. When rotating or flanking, use the space beneath the Tower to break sight lines and move toward the next position. A Tower angle can help, but it does not replace defending the active point.

- ADAPT OR DIE IN A FIGHT AGAINST THE ULTIMATE THREAT
- Combat means making choices — different loadouts, different paths through the mission. Combat missions that provide more player choice. There is no one-size-fits-all solution – it is your choice whether to take the stealthy approach or go loud taking on any and all foes.

Search & Destroy
Attackers starting at Trucks are slightly closer to B than A. A is more exposed and tends to favor mid-range engagements; B is confined and favors close-quarters strength. The Tower can provide useful angles, but keep track of the bomb objective instead of treating the elevated position as the goal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCutthroat
Cutthroat is a 3v3v3 mode. Rust’s compact layout can make an aggressive engagement tempting, but pushing without regard for the other team can leave you caught between opponents. Balance quick pressure with patience, and watch for the overtime flag: capturing it can break a stalemate.

Which modes can you play on Rust?
Modern Warfare III classifies Rust as a Core map. Activision’s multiplayer guide lists Core modes including Team Deathmatch, Domination, Search & Destroy, Kill Confirmed, Free-for-All, Hardpoint, and Control, and identifies Cutthroat as a 3v3v3 mode. Those descriptions do not guarantee that every mode will be available in a Rust playlist at a particular time; playlist rotations can change.
Sources and map details
Activision’s Rust guide is the source for the map areas, tactical recommendations, and mode-specific layouts. It describes three Domination flags and five Hardpoints, four of them at ground level; these are map-guide details, not player-performance statistics.
