Helvum is a graphical patchbay for PipeWire on Linux. It shows applications and devices as a visual graph and lets you create or remove the connections between them, so audio, video, and MIDI data can be sent where you need it. It is a routing tool, not an audio editor, and it does not replace PipeWire itself.

What Helvum does

PipeWire handles audio and video on modern Linux desktops, but it does not give you a simple way to see every stream and decide where it goes. Helvum fills that gap. Its project README describes it as a GTK-based patchbay for PipeWire and says it was inspired by Catia, the patchbay written for the JACK audio system.

In practice, the window presents the nodes PipeWire manages (applications, hardware inputs and outputs, and other endpoints) and their ports. You create a link by connecting an output port to a compatible input port, and you remove a link by deleting that connection. Nothing is routed until you draw the link, and removing it restores the previous path.

The Flathub listing describes the purpose in its own words: “It allows creating and removing connections between applications and/or devices to reroute flow of audio, video and MIDI data to where it is needed.” That sentence comes from the listing, not from an individual developer.

What it routes, and what it does not yet do

The Flathub description explicitly covers audio, video, and MIDI. Helvum is therefore useful for music production setups that send MIDI between applications, for routing a recording or streaming application’s audio to a particular output, and for sending video streams between applications that expose them to PipeWire.

The README also lists two features as planned: volume control and a debug mode that exposes advanced node and port information. Treat both as roadmap items. Do not expect them in a release just because the README mentions them.

Which version you will get

Helvum is packaged in more than one place, and the versions do not match. Check the channel you install from before you quote or compare a version number.

Debian trixie (Debian stable) package record 0.5.1+20240829-2 Debian package; files listed for several architectures, including amd64 and arm64 This is the version in Debian trixie. It is not the newest release of the project.

The Flathub download counter showed 2,286 downloads per month when the listing was checked in 2026. That is a live, changing figure from one listing, not an audited user count, and it should not be read as a measure of how widely Helvum is used.

How to install Helvum

Start with your distribution’s package if it carries Helvum. If it does not, or you need a newer build than your distribution provides, use the Flathub listing. Building from source is the last option.

Option 1: Debian trixie or a distribution that packages it

  1. Refresh the package index with sudo apt update.
  2. Install the package with sudo apt install helvum.
  3. Launch Helvum from your application menu, or run helvum in a terminal, and confirm that your PipeWire applications appear in the graph.

On Debian trixie this installs version 0.5.1+20240829-2. Other distributions may package a different version or none at all.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Option 2: Flathub

  1. Open the Helvum page on Flathub in a browser, or search for Helvum in a Flathub-enabled software center.
  2. Install the listing. Use the application ID shown on the Flathub page if you install from the command line with flatpak install.
  3. Confirm the version after install. The Flathub listing reports 0.6.2 at the time it was checked.

Because the Flathub listing is community-provided and unverified, it is not an official upstream release channel. Use it knowingly.

Option 3: Build from source

The project README documents a manual build using Meson, Rust, Clang, and the GTK and PipeWire development packages. Follow the build section of the README for the current dependency list. Build requirements change as SDK and library versions move on, so use the README’s current text rather than an older guide.

Maintenance status

A GitHub fork of Helvum carries a README that says, “Helvum is currently not actively maintained.” That statement comes from the fork, not from a dated announcement by the upstream project, so treat it as a warning to verify rather than a confirmed fact about the main repository.

The package listings show that Helvum is available from Flathub and Debian. They do not show whether upstream development is active. Before you depend on Helvum for a production setup, check the project repository for recent commits and releases, and check your distribution’s package page for its update history.

What the available sources do not settle

Readers often ask how Helvum compares with qpwgraph, another PipeWire patchbay. The sources reviewed for this article do not establish detailed feature differences between the two, whether routing state persists between sessions in either tool, which one suits a particular workflow, or how their reliability compares. Community discussion uses the comparison, but it is anecdotal and does not settle these points.

If you need to choose between them, test both on your own setup against the points that matter to you: the media types you route, whether links survive a restart, how the graph handles many nodes, how each is packaged for your distribution, how recently each has been released, and the workflow you intend to follow.

Optional hardware

Helvum does not require special hardware. If you want to route signals from a physical microphone, instrument, or monitor output through PipeWire, a USB audio interface is one common option. The sources reviewed do not verify compatibility with any particular model, so check the interface’s Linux support with its manufacturer before buying.

The software itself is free to download from Flathub and from Debian’s archive, and no paid tier or service is involved.
