To hide a text conversation on Android without deleting it, archive it in Google Messages: touch and hold the conversation, then tap Archive. The thread leaves the Home screen but stays readable under More > Archived. Archiving is a tidy-up feature, not a lock. It does not require a password, and a new message to that conversation brings it back to the Home screen.
“Hide” can mean four different things on a phone, and each has a different fix. If the goal is to keep someone from seeing message text on a locked screen, change the lock-screen notification settings. If the goal is fewer interruptions, silence the conversation. If the goal is a separate, more private app setup, Private Space is an option, but it does not carry existing messages across.
Choose the method that matches what you want hidden
Each option removes a different layer of visibility. Check the table before you change anything, because some methods leave the conversation fully visible in the app.
| Method | What it hides | Where the conversation remains | Does a new message make it visible again? | Keeps the existing conversation? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Archive (Google Messages) | The thread from the Home screen list | Under More > Archived, fully readable | Yes, it returns to the Home screen | Yes |
| Lock-screen notification privacy | Message content in lock-screen notifications | Inside the messaging app, unchanged | Notifications still appear, with content hidden or suppressed depending on the setting | Yes |
| Silent conversation | Sound, vibration and pop-up alerts for that thread | Inbox, unchanged | Messages still arrive silently and appear in the thread | Yes |
| Private Space | Its apps, from the launcher and other system surfaces, while the space is locked | Only inside the separate Private Space instance | Not stated for message threads specifically | No. Existing main-space history is not copied |
Menu names and paths differ between Android manufacturers and versions. The steps below follow Google Messages and the stock Android labels described in Google’s and Samsung’s official support material.

Archive a conversation in Google Messages
Archiving is the closest match to “hide without deleting” for a single thread. It works for old conversations you want out of the way but still need to read.
Archive the thread
- Open Google Messages.
- Touch and hold the conversation. You can select several conversations at once.
- Tap Archive.
The thread disappears from the Home screen. Nothing is deleted, and the message history stays intact.
Find and restore an archived thread
- Open Google Messages and tap More.
- Tap Archived.
- Touch and hold the conversation, then tap Unarchive.
Archive is not an access control. Anyone who can open the unlocked phone can open the Archived view. If a new message is sent to an archived conversation, the thread returns automatically to the Home screen, so archiving will not keep a active contact out of sight.

Hide message previews on the lock screen
If the concern is that someone will glance at the phone and read a preview, the fix is a notification setting, not a messaging feature. Lock-screen settings change what the phone displays. They do not move or hide conversations inside the app.
- Open Settings, then go to Notifications.
- Find the lock-screen notification controls. On some phones they sit under a separate Lock screen entry.
- Choose one of the available options. Depending on the phone, these may be Show sensitive content turned off, Hide sensitive notification content, or Don’t show notifications.
“Don’t show notifications” is the broadest choice and applies to all apps when set as the default. Some phones also let you limit lock-screen display for a single app, so check the app-level setting if one app still shows content you want hidden.
Silence one conversation
Silencing stops the alerts for a thread. It is useful for a group chat that keeps buzzing, but the messages still arrive and stay in the inbox.

Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Android’s Private Space can be locked so that its apps are hidden from the launcher and various operating-system surfaces. This is the only built-in option here that hides apps rather than threads, and it works differently from the other methods.
Installing a messaging app in Private Space creates a new instance of that app. It does not import the existing messages from your main space, and it does not change the main-space instance. A reader who sets up Private Space expecting current SMS or RCS history to appear there will be disappointed. Use it for conversations you start from scratch in that space, and keep the existing threads where they are.

Samsung Messages support has ended on newer devices
Samsung’s U.S. support notice says Samsung Messages is no longer supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later, starting July 2026. It recommends Google Messages for Android 12 and later. The notice also says settings and screens can vary by carrier, software version and device.
On a current Galaxy phone, follow the Google Messages steps above. If you still use Samsung Messages on an older device, check which app is set as the default messaging app before following any instructions, because menus differ between the two.

Categories and muting in Samsung Messages
Samsung’s Messages guide describes conversation categories and muting on supported devices. Categories sort threads into groups. Muting stops notifications for a conversation but does not hide or remove it. Mute options, like notification settings, can vary by carrier and device.
Quick Recap
If a hidden conversation still shows up
- The thread reappeared on the Home screen: Someone sent a new message to that conversation. Archiving does not keep new messages out of view, so archive it again if you still want it hidden.
- A message preview still appears on the lock screen: Check the lock-screen notification setting, then look for an app-level override in the same Notifications area.
- The conversation is not in Private Space: This is expected. Private Space starts a new instance, and older threads from the main space are not copied into it.
- Notifications still sound after you choose Silent: Check whether the sender is in a group or whether the device’s notification settings apply a different sound to that app’s alerts.
