Tire width matters, but it does not produce a single winner. Whether a wider or narrower tire performs better depends on the surface you drive on most, the tire model, and the sizes your vehicle maker approves. In ADAC’s winter comparison on a Volkswagen Golf, the narrower sizes did better on snow, slush, and aquaplaning, while the widest size did better on dry pavement. Width is one variable among several, and it is never a substitute for checking fitment.
Why there is no universal best width
A wider tire has a larger contact patch in some respects, but it also changes how the tire deforms, how water is channeled away, how the car steers, and how much rolling resistance the tire creates. Those effects pull in different directions depending on the conditions. A tire that is ideal on a dry summer road can be the wrong choice in deep slush, and the reverse is also true.
ADAC, the German automobile club, puts the question in its own terms as “Besser schmal oder breit?” (“Better narrow or wide?”). Its answer is conditional: the right size depends on the use case, and the choice between two models of the same size can matter as much as the choice between two sizes.
What ADAC’s winter test found
The clearest controlled comparison is ADAC’s test of five widths of the Dunlop Winter Sport 5 fitted to a Volkswagen Golf. The tested sizes ran from 195/65 R15 to 225/40 R18. ADAC published the report on October 25, 2018, and all five sizes received an overall “good” rating. The differences between sizes were smaller than the differences between models within the same size.

In one water test condition, ADAC reported that with 7 mm of water on the road, the 225 mm-wide tires lost road contact at about 70 km/h, while the 195 mm-wide tires did so only above 80 km/h. That figure applies to that test vehicle, tire family, and water depth. It is not a general speed limit for wide or narrow tires.
The trade-offs readers should weigh
ADAC’s 2025 consumer overview, published March 6, 2025, describes the same pattern more generally. Wider tires gave better dry-road grip in its comparison, and their lower sidewalls make them stiffer, which sharpens handling. The same wider, flatter profile is less comfortable over bumps than a narrower tire with a taller sidewall. These points describe the comparison on that page, not every tire pair on the market.

Rolling resistance and fuel use
In the comparison context of its 2025 overview, ADAC reports rolling resistance about 6% higher for a 30 mm increase in width. That is a single comparison, not a fixed rule. The National Academies’ 2006 report, Tires and Passenger Vehicle Fuel Economy, explains that tire design, construction, and operating conditions all affect rolling resistance and fuel consumption. Width is entangled with those other factors, so “wider always uses more fuel” overstates what the evidence shows.
Bridgestone’s ologic technology shows how design packages work. It combines a narrower width with a larger diameter and higher inflation pressure, along with changes to materials, tread, and structure. Bridgestone reports a 30% reduction in rolling-resistance coefficient and a 10% wet-braking improvement against a specified conventional tire comparator. Those figures describe the whole technology package against that comparator, not the effect of width alone.

Steering, comfort, and wear
Steering feel and ride comfort are the trade-offs most drivers notice first. A taller sidewall cushions impacts and usually feels softer, while a lower sidewall gives a more direct response. Wear and price vary by model and by the specific comparison, so compare tires of the same model and line when you want to isolate the effect of size.
Fitment comes before preference
A width preference alone does not establish that a tire fits your wheel, carries the required load, or is an approved option for your vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration directs drivers to the owner’s manual or the Tire and Loading Information label, and advises buying tires in the original size or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

To find the approved sizes for your car:
- Open the owner’s manual and look for the tire size and load information, or check the Tire and Loading Information label.
- On most vehicles, find the label on the driver-side door edge or door post.
- Note the tire size as printed, for example 225/40 R18, and any alternate sizes the manufacturer lists.
- Confirm the load index and speed rating match the original specification.
- Only then compare tires within the approved sizes, using the road conditions you drive in.
If you are considering a size outside the approved list, consult a tire professional or the vehicle manufacturer before buying. Snow chains are a winter accessory only when both the vehicle and the tire fitment allow them, so check clearance before choosing a width for winter use.

How to decide
- Start with fitment: use only original or manufacturer-approved sizes.
- Match the surface: winter conditions with snow and slush favor the narrower approved sizes in ADAC’s test; dry-road grip and steering response favor the wider ones.
- Compare models first: ADAC found that model differences can exceed size differences within the same tire line.
- Weigh comfort and efficiency: wider tires typically ride firmer, and rolling-resistance differences should be read against the specific comparison, not as a universal rule.
- Check winter equipment: confirm snow-chain clearance before assuming a wider size will work in snow.
For shopping, search for replacement tires in your vehicle-approved size, then compare models within that size.
