Yes, your iPhone may use more battery for a short time after installing iOS 27, and Apple says that can be normal. Background tasks related to an update can temporarily affect battery life and temperature. Apple recommends waiting a few days, then checking again. Persistent or severe drain is not automatically normal: look at battery usage and battery health before concluding that iOS 27 is the cause.
iOS 27 began rolling out on September 14, 2026, according to Apple’s announcement. Apple’s post-update advice is general guidance for iOS 26 and later, not a published iOS 27-specific battery study.
Why battery life can dip after installing iOS 27
An iPhone may continue doing update-related work in the background after installation. Apple says that activity can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. A phone that feels warmer or needs charging sooner shortly after updating may therefore be experiencing a temporary effect—but that does not prove the update is the cause of every battery problem.

Check whether an update is still affecting battery use
- Open Settings > Battery. Look for battery suggestions or an Insight such as “Ongoing iOS Update.” Apple says this can indicate that update-related work is still finishing in the background.
- Compare Daily Usage. Check whether battery use is notably different from your usual pattern and note when the change began.
- Tap View All Battery Usage. Review App and System Activity Usage, including background activity and screen use. Apple also identifies low or no mobile coverage and notifications as factors that can appear in usage information.
- If the update was recent, wait a few days and compare again. This is Apple’s recommendation for lower battery life after an update.
The labels and details shown can vary by iPhone and software version. For Apple’s instructions, see If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly and the iPhone User Guide’s battery usage and health page.
How to tell whether an app, signal, or battery may be involved
Look for an app or activity pattern
If one app accounts for unusually high use, or has substantial background activity, that is a more specific lead than the fact that the phone was recently updated. High screen use can also explain heavier consumption. Compare the activity shown with what you were doing during the period; a usage listing is a clue, not by itself proof that an app is malfunctioning.

Consider cellular coverage and notifications
Apple lists low or no mobile coverage and notifications among factors shown in battery usage information. If the drain coincides with time in a weak-signal area or a burst of notification activity, compare usage under different conditions before attributing the change to iOS.
Check Battery Health separately
App and system usage describe what has been consuming power; Battery Health is a separate diagnostic. On iPhone 15 and later, Apple labels the screen Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, it is Battery Health & Charging. If the screen shows Service, Apple says to consider replacing the battery. You can contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Use Low Power Mode for a short-term boost
Low Power Mode can help extend runtime while you are away from a charger, but it does not identify or repair the cause of drain. Apple says it reduces or disables some functions, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. Turn it on from Settings > Battery. If you need power away from an outlet, a compatible power bank can recharge the phone, but it likewise will not resolve an underlying battery or software issue.

If battery life remains substantially worse after Apple’s suggested wait, or the phone shows a Service message, use the usage patterns and Battery Health status to decide what to check next. A recent update alone is not enough to establish the cause. Persistent problems that are not explained by visible app activity, signal conditions, or the update period are a reason to seek support from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
