AT&T carrier settings version 72.0.3 is reportedly rolling out to iPhone 18 Pro Max devices running the iOS 27.2 beta. The update was reported by 9to5Mac on October 8, 2026; Apple and AT&T have not published a release note confirming this specific beta update.
What changed for iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the iOS 27.2 beta?
According to 9to5Mac, the beta devices had been using AT&T carrier settings version 72.0.2 before the reported rollout of version 72.0.3. The report attributes the sighting to Aaron Perris on X. It does not identify what settings changed or establish that the update is available to every eligible phone.
How does the reported version compare with iOS 27.0?
9to5Mac reported that iOS 27.0 users received carrier settings version 72.1 the previous week. The versions are reported in different iOS contexts; the available information does not explain why they differ or show that either version is more effective. They are not user-selectable alternatives.
| Reported iOS context | AT&T carrier settings version | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 27.2 beta on iPhone 18 Pro Max | 72.0.3, previously 72.0.2 | Reported rollout, not confirmed by an Apple or AT&T release note |
| iOS 27.0 | 72.1 | 9to5Mac reported receipt the prior week; no specific changes are described |
How to check for the AT&T carrier settings update
Apple says carrier settings updates can improve cellular connectivity and performance, and may add support for features such as 5G or Wi-Fi Calling. To check whether your iPhone offers an update:
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or a cellular network.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- If an update prompt appears, follow the on-screen instructions.
- Check the version shown next to Carrier.
If no prompt appears, that does not confirm that version 72.0.3 is available for your device. Apple recommends contacting your carrier to verify that the latest carrier settings are installed. See Apple’s instructions for manually updating carrier settings.
Does version 72.0.3 fix the reported AT&T service problem?
That has not been established. The 9to5Mac report also describes a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T who lost cellular service, with “SOS” appearing in the status bar. It says Apple told the outlet that iOS 27.0.1 and a carrier settings update were intended to prevent further cases, while devices that had already lost service still needed hardware replacement. The report does not identify the technical cause, and it provides no evidence that version 72.0.3 restores service on an affected phone.

What SOS means, and what to try if it appears
Apple says “SOS” or “SOS only” means the iPhone is not connected to its subscribed cellular network. Emergency calls through other carrier networks may still be possible where supported; Apple identifies Australia, Canada, and the United States. The steps below are general troubleshooting advice, not a confirmed fix for the reported AT&T incident.
- Turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Check for a carrier settings prompt under Settings > General > About.
- Contact your carrier to check account standing, coverage, outages, or device restrictions.
