Yes. You can try Luxir on a Mac or Windows laptop without dual-booting Linux or compiling C++ by running its official Linux x86-64 binary in a Docker container. This is a community-documented evaluation setup—not a native Mac or Windows release, and not a production benchmarking environment. On Apple Silicon and Windows ARM, it also relies on x86-64 emulation.
What runs on your laptop—and what does not
Luxir is an open-source hybrid search engine created by Yonik Seeley. Its first public release, version 0.1.0, arrived in September 2026 as pre-release software. It provides full-text and vector search, faceting, analytics, and gRPC and HTTP/JSON interfaces. Luxir is a separate project, not a version of Solr or Lucene. See the creator’s introduction to Luxir.
The official 0.1.0 release provides Linux x86-64 binaries in x86-64-v2, v3, and v4 CPU tiers. It does not establish native macOS, Windows, or ARM binaries. The release states that Linux binaries require glibc 2.35 or newer. Docker Desktop supplies the Linux-container environment on Mac and Windows; Docker documents its availability and, on Windows, WSL 2 integration in its Docker Desktop documentation. The container runs Linux, but you do not need to install Linux as your laptop’s operating system.
The steps below follow Jayesh Shende’s community Docker walkthrough. Its example downloads the official Luxir 0.1.0 x86-64-v2 binary, pins the container to linux/amd64, exposes HTTP on port 9400 and gRPC on port 9401, and stores data in a named volume. The example files are Dockerfile, docker-compose.yml, books.ndjson, and search.json.

On Apple Silicon, Shende recommends enabling Docker Desktop’s Rosetta x86/amd64 emulation. On Windows ARM, the guide recommends confirming that Docker can run amd64 containers, usually through WSL 2. These are the community guide’s configuration recommendations; they do not make the Luxir binary native ARM software. Docker-on-laptop results involving emulation are not a sound basis for performance claims.
Run the sample with Docker Compose
1. Prepare Docker Desktop
Install and start Docker Desktop for your operating system, and confirm Docker Compose V2 is available. On Apple Silicon, enable the Rosetta x86/amd64 emulation option in Docker Desktop and restart Docker Desktop if prompted. On Windows ARM, verify that Docker can run linux/amd64 containers.

2. Put the example files in one directory
Use the four files from Shende’s walkthrough: Dockerfile, docker-compose.yml, books.ndjson, and search.json. The example Dockerfile downloads Luxir 0.1.0’s official x86-64-v2 Linux binary; Compose sets the platform to linux/amd64, maps ports 9400 and 9401, and uses a named volume for data. The guide describes the image download as potentially time-consuming; its timing is not a guaranteed estimate.

5. Index the sample books and search
Use the update endpoint and JSON request shown in the walkthrough to index books.ndjson, including ?commit=true on the update URL. The author warns that leaving off commit=true may leave searches empty. Then post the included search.json query to the collection search endpoint. The example indexes two books and searches by author and year.

Know the limits before using Luxir beyond a demo
Luxir 0.1.0 is pre-release. Its creator says APIs and the on-disk index format may change without notice before version 1.0, so an upgrade may require reindexing. The creator’s announcement also says the software is single-node and does not implement replication, distributed search, authentication, or TLS. Keep a test instance behind an appropriate security boundary; do not expose an unauthenticated service publicly.
The laptop walkthrough is for evaluation, not production benchmarking. ARM emulation is not native ARM execution, and performance from this setup should not be treated as a representative production measurement. For production or capacity evaluation, use Linux x86-64 without emulation and consult current Luxir operations documentation.
