A soft silicone sheet can estimate its own three-dimensional shape by measuring how light changes inside optical waveguides embedded in it. In an MIT research prototype, 14 waveguides and perimeter electronics let an algorithm reconstruct bending and twisting; the team reported sub-centimeter accuracy in tests with 3D-printed molds. This is a laboratory demonstration, not a commercial or clinically validated device.

How does the sheet track its shape?

The prototype combines elastomeric optical waveguides with a silicone matrix. LEDs send light through the waveguides, and light sensors measure how much reaches the other end. When the sheet bends, its waveguides bend too, changing the transmitted light. An algorithm uses those readings to estimate the surface’s overall three-dimensional shape.

Each waveguide has a roughened side that makes its light response sensitive to bending in either direction. The researchers arranged the waveguides in a zig-zag pattern to help distinguish shapes that might otherwise produce similar sensor readings. The design therefore relies not just on detecting a change, but on combining responses from differently positioned sensing elements.

What did the researchers build?

Qifan Yu, Nina Cao, and Kaitlyn Becker of MIT fabricated a sheet measuring 16 cm × 16 cm × 0.5 cm, with 14 optical waveguides embedded in the silicone and electronics around its perimeter. They used simulations to choose the waveguide layout before making the physical prototype. The paper describes the sensing surface as fully soft and reports real-time shape sensing with sub-centimeter accuracy. The study appeared in Advanced Intelligent Systems, first published July 29, 2026.

The system also provides a proof of concept for sensing external force as well as shape. MIT’s account describes an upper-arm wrap demonstration that showed joint motion and external-force sensing. The optical fibers in this version are 1 millimeter thick; thinner fibers are a future development direction, not a feature of the reported prototype. MIT News reported on the work on October 7, 2026.

How accurate was it in the reported tests?

In tests using 3D-printed molds, Yu told MIT News that the team’s reconstruction error was less than 0.4 centimeters. MIT’s report contrasts that result with around 1 to 2 centimeters for existing designs based on rigid sensors. These are reported results under the described test conditions, not a universal accuracy guarantee or a direct clinical comparison.

What happens if a waveguide is damaged?

The researchers report that redundant waveguide responses allow the system to remain resilient to some damage. MIT says the remaining fibers could still reconstruct the overall shape when a few were cut or disconnected. That finding does not establish unlimited fault tolerance: the sources do not specify that the sheet will work after any number or pattern of failures.

What could this technology be used for?

The researchers identify physical therapy, virtual reality, teleoperation, and soft robotics as possible application areas. In rehabilitation, a surface worn on the arm could potentially collect information about motion and stretching. Yu told MIT News that such sensing could be useful for gathering movement data, while Becker described the goal as developing tools to help therapists track and quantify progress over time.

  • 1. Bending sensor. The degree of bending of the sensor can be translated into a change in resistance value. The more the bend, the higher the resistance. This sensor can be used to make an glove
  • 2. Bending direction: the side with the word is the inner side when bending. Avoid bending pin portion ( the part that is not bent) during use, as damage may result

Those are proposed uses, not demonstrated clinical outcomes. The reported work does not establish patient benefit, routine use in therapy, or a product available for purchase. The demonstrated upper-arm wrap shows motion and force sensing, but it is not evidence of a validated rehabilitation system.

How does it compare with other surface-shape sensors?

The study situates the approach among work on resistive sensors, fiber Bragg grating sensors, and other sensor arrays. The useful distinction is that this prototype aims for a fully soft sensing surface while using multiple optical waveguides whose placement helps resolve different bend directions. Its mold-test reconstruction error and damage-resilience result are specific to the reported research; they should not be generalized into a product-wide ranking against other sensor systems.

For now, the clearest way to understand the result is as a research prototype that demonstrates a method: embed optical sensing elements in a soft sheet, interpret their changing light signals together, and reconstruct the sheet’s shape. Translating that method into thinner, wearable, or clinically useful systems remains future work.
