To turn a Windows 11 app execution alias on or off, open Settings, search for App execution aliases, then change the switch for the relevant app. Apps for websites is a separate setting: it controls whether supported website links open in an installed app. Use Settings search for either page if the menu path differs on your Windows release.

How to turn an app execution alias on or off

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select the Settings search box and enter App execution aliases.
  3. Open the matching settings result, find the relevant app, and switch its alias on or off.

An execution alias is a short name that can start an app without requiring you to enter its full executable path. The page lists aliases registered by apps available on your device, so the entries can vary. Microsoft documents that a packaged app’s AppExecutionAlias entry can be disabled here: Microsoft’s app launch options documentation.

Turning an alias off disables that registered way of launching the app; it does not uninstall the app.

When to use Apps for websites

If the issue is a website link opening an installed app—or you want supported links to open in that app—search Settings for Apps for websites. This setting associates supported website links with an app; if the app is not installed, the website opens in the browser. Microsoft documents the feature in its Windows default-app guidance.

You can also open the Apps for websites page with its documented Settings URI, ms-settings:appsforwebsites. Press Windows key + R, enter the URI, and press Enter. Microsoft lists this URI in its Settings URI reference.

Which Windows setting should you change?

Setting What it controls Use it when
App execution aliases Short names that start apps without a full executable path. A command or alias launches an app unexpectedly, or you want to enable or disable that alias. Microsoft documentation
Apps for websites Whether supported website links open in an associated installed app. A website link opens in an app, or you want it to remain in the browser. Microsoft documentation
Default apps Which application handles file types or link types. A file or link opens in the wrong default application. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps. Microsoft instructions

If you cannot find the setting or app

  • Search Settings for the feature’s exact name rather than relying on a particular menu breadcrumb; labels and navigation can vary across Windows 11 releases.
  • If an app is missing from App execution aliases, the page may have no alias registered for that app. The available entries depend on installed apps and their registrations.
  • If a website association does not behave as expected, check that the associated app is installed. Apps for websites applies to supported links and registered apps; it is not a command-line alias control.
  • If your concern is a file extension or a link type opening in the wrong application, change its association under Default apps rather than changing an execution alias.
