Don’t rewrite every manufacturer-supplied product description by default. Improve product copy where it is inaccurate, unclear, or leaves a meaningful buying question unanswered. Put effort into category pages when shoppers need help understanding an assortment and navigating to the right products. In both cases, add useful, verified information—not extra words for their own sake.

Is manufacturer-supplied copy a duplicate-content penalty?

No. Google says some duplicate content is normal and is not a violation of its spam policies. But Google may group similar pages and select a canonical URL it considers the most complete and useful for search users. That can affect which URL appears in results, and duplicated pages may also be less useful to shoppers; it does not mean every page using manufacturer copy will be penalized or that rewriting guarantees a ranking increase. See Google’s guidance on consolidating duplicate URLs.

Canonicalization and editorial quality are related but separate issues. Canonical signals help search engines identify a representative URL among duplicate or similar pages, but Google may choose a different canonical. A product page still needs to explain its item clearly to people, whether or not its URL has a canonical signal.

What should product pages and category pages do?

A product page should help someone understand a specific item: its verified features, fit, limitations, and relevant compatibility. A category page should help someone make sense of a range of products, compare meaningful differences, and reach the appropriate product or subcategory. Google’s ecommerce navigation guidance describes a path from menus through category and subcategory pages to product pages; crawlable links help Google discover products and understand the site’s structure. Google’s ecommerce site-structure guidance supports treating these page types as complementary, not interchangeable.

For product information, Google Merchant Center recommends descriptions longer than 200 characters for rich product description pages and suggests organizing information with paragraphs or bullets, including highlights and details where appropriate. That is guidance for Merchant Center product data—not a minimum organic-ranking word count and not a requirement to rewrite every SKU. Google also recommends product structured data and Merchant Center feeds to help it understand product data and make pages eligible for richer appearances; eligibility does not guarantee a display or ranking. Merchant Center description guidance and Google’s product structured data documentation explain those separate uses.

When is a rewrite worth doing?

  • The supplied copy is inaccurate, confusing, or incomplete. Correct factual errors and clarify details that affect the purchase decision.
  • Different models are presented as though they were identical. Explain verified differences, such as fit or compatibility, rather than merely rearranging the same sentences.
  • A real buyer question is unanswered. Add accurate guidance about who the item suits, what it works with, or what trade-offs to check.
  • The site earns value beyond a catalog listing. Affiliate pages that copy merchant descriptions and reviews without adding original value match Google’s thin-affiliation concern. Google identifies additional product information, original reviews, rigorous testing and ratings, navigation, and comparisons as ways pages can provide value. Do not imply a hands-on test unless one actually took place. Google’s thin-affiliation policy describes the concern.

Keep manufacturer facts and verified specifications intact where they are useful. Add differentiation or advice only when you can support it with reliable product information. If no one has physically tested the item, describe the work as a specification-based comparison or manufacturer-data analysis rather than a test or personal review.

When should category pages get the effort?

Prioritize category work when shoppers face a broad or confusing assortment and need orientation before opening individual listings. Useful additions can include selection criteria, explanations of meaningful product differences, and crawlable links to relevant subcategories and products. A category page should answer an assortment-level question; it should not be a thin keyword container or repeat the same generic copy used on each product page.

Google’s people-first guidance asks whether a page helps its intended audience accomplish a goal and whether readers leave feeling they have learned enough to do so. It also says Google has no preferred word count. A category guide or product rewrite should therefore earn its space by helping someone choose, not by meeting an invented length target. Google’s helpful, reliable, people-first content guidance sets out those principles.

How to allocate editorial effort

  1. Define each page’s job. Assign assortment and comparison questions to categories; reserve product pages for specific-model facts and fit. Avoid having both page types repeat the same generic text.
  2. Check product facts before adding copy. Verify specifications, compatibility, and other claims. Preserve accurate details; do not invent benefits to make descriptions sound unique.
  3. Improve categories where shoppers need help choosing. Add selection guidance and links that clarify the assortment. Skip filler.
  4. Prioritize product pages selectively. Start with important listings whose copy is wrong, confusing, duplicated across materially different models, or missing an answer to a real buying question. This is a practical prioritization method, not a Google ranking formula.
  5. Describe evidence honestly. For reviews and comparisons, say what was actually tested and how. If there was no hands-on test, identify the work as an analysis of specifications or manufacturer data.
  6. Write distinct page summaries where possible. Google says identical or similar meta descriptions are not helpful when individual pages appear in results and recommends an accurate description for each page where feasible. This is a separate task from rewriting the full description on every SKU. Google’s snippet guidance covers page summaries.
  7. Evaluate changes without assuming causation. Compare page-level search visibility, click-through behavior, engagement, conversions, and customer questions before and after meaningful edits. Google’s cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed outcome or universal test period.

Evidence to gather Verified specifications, compatibility, actual test results if any, and support questions Assortment attributes, meaningful differences, navigation behavior, and shopper questions
