In a browser video trimmer, Fast commonly cuts by copying the compressed audio and video streams, while Precise commonly decodes and re-encodes them to place the boundary on the selected frame. Fast processing avoids another encoding generation but may be limited by where the file can be sought; precise processing gives finer control but takes more work and can affect quality. The labels are tool-specific, so check how your trimmer handles the format you are using.

What actually happens in each mode?

Fast: copy the existing streams

Fast mode commonly uses stream copy: it copies compressed audio and video packets without decoding or encoding them. FFmpeg describes this as very fast and says it does not reduce quality through re-encoding. Because the frames are not decoded, this method cannot apply filters that require decoded video. Stream copy can also fail when the source streams are not compatible with the output container or with the software that will play the result. FFmpeg documentation

Precise: decode, then encode again

Precise or Exact mode commonly works by decoding the source and encoding a new output. That lets the trimmer work at the selected frame rather than relying solely on a convenient stream-copy seek point. Transcoding requires more processing and usually creates another encoding generation; FFmpeg notes that it tends to be computationally expensive and in most cases degrades stream quality. The amount of any change depends on the source and encoder settings; no universal quality-loss figure applies. FFmpeg documentation

Why can a Fast cut start a little early?

A requested timestamp is not always a point where a compressed video can begin cleanly. Many formats seek to the closest available point before the requested time, rather than exactly to it. During accurate transcoding, FFmpeg says it decodes and discards the preceding segment by default; with stream copy, that extra segment is preserved. As a result, a fast-trimmed clip can include frames from before the selected start. This is a common consequence of stream-copy seeking, not a guarantee that every Fast mode will cut early. Why can the same Fast cut look different in different players?

Some tools handle the gap between the preceding seek point and the requested start with container timing metadata. Anjin Media documents a Fast mode that copies streams and uses an MP4 edit list to hide the earlier pre-roll. A player that ignores the edit list may show those earlier frames. That describes this tool’s method; it does not mean every browser trimmer uses edit lists or that every player ignores them. Anjin Media video trimmer

If a clip starts correctly in one player but early in another, the difference may be how the players interpret that timing metadata. Anjin Media recommends frame-accurate re-encoding as a workaround for this behavior. Anjin Media video trimmer

Which mode should you choose?

Fast Speed matters, avoiding re-encoding is important, and a boundary aligned with a usable seek point is acceptable. The cut may retain material before the selected start, and compatibility can depend on the container and player.
Precise or Exact The cut must land on a particular frame, such as the start of a spoken word or an action, or playback needs to be consistent in software that may not honor timing metadata. It requires more processing and re-encodes the output, so quality can change depending on settings.

Check the trimmer’s format notes

Fast and Precise are product labels, not a universal browser standard. The same tool may handle different formats differently: FXI Studio documents Fast stream-copy mode for MP4 and MOV, while WebM always uses Exact mode in that trimmer. Check the tool’s own format guidance before relying on a mode name, especially if the output must work in a particular player. FXI Studio Video Trimmer documentation
