The PS5 DualSense creates tactile feedback with two actuators that PlayStation says replace traditional rumble motors. A game determines when and how to use them, shaping different sensations to communicate events such as movement, weather, or combat. Sony does not publish the actuators’ exact internal design in the product information cited here, so “haptic motors” is a convenient label—not a confirmed description of their construction.
What is inside the DualSense?
PlayStation describes the controller as having “dual actuators” that replace traditional rumble motors. That establishes the number and broad role of the components: they produce tactile feedback. Sony’s DualSense product page does not specify the actuators’ internal topology or publish measurements such as force, frequency range, or response speed. It would therefore be misleading to identify them as a particular motor design or to claim they work in a particular electrical or mechanical way.
The distinction matters because “haptics” describes the tactile experience, while “actuator” names the component producing it. Calling them haptic motors is common shorthand, but the official product description is more limited.

How does software turn actuator output into sensations?
The game’s designers decide which events should be felt, and how their timing and intensity should differ. PlayStation Studios sound designer Harvey Scott explained that “The DualSense controller’s haptic feedback is powered by technology that makes it similar to that of a loudspeaker or headphones.” In the context of his account of creating Returnal’s controller effects, the comparison explains why sound-design principles can help shape haptic experiences. It is an analogy about the technology and design process, not evidence that the controller contains speakers.

Returnal shows how a game can put that design into practice. Its developers describe using procedural pulses to evoke raindrops, varying feedback to suggest direction of movement, and creating distinct tactile cues for combat information. They also reserved the strongest sensations for selected moments. That gives quieter and more forceful feedback room to feel different; it is a design choice for Returnal, not a guarantee that every game uses the actuators in the same way.
Haptic feedback versus adaptive triggers
They are separate features with different jobs. Haptics provide tactile feedback through the controller. Adaptive triggers change the force and tension felt when pressing L2 and R2—for example, to evoke drawing a bow or braking a car. PlayStation’s product description and its 2020 DualSense announcement describe these as distinct aspects of the controller. Neither page provides a quantitative output specification for a direct performance comparison.

Does DualSense haptics work on PC, Mac, and mobile?
Support depends on the game and platform, not just the controller. PlayStation’s Controllers Support guidance says haptic feedback requires game support, may require a USB connection on PC, and is not compatible with Mac computers and mobile devices under the listed guidance. Check that support information for the device, game, connection, and software you intend to use, since compatibility guidance can change.
