To block one app, open Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Apps & Websites > Restrictions on a compatible iPhone or iPad, select the app, tap Block App, and confirm. The blocked app is hidden or dimmed on the Home Screen, not deleted. If you don’t see that path, use the Screen Time controls available on the child’s device; menus vary with software version, account setup, age, and region.
Block a specific app from Family Sharing
- On a parent or guardian’s device, open Settings > Family.
- Tap the child’s name, then open Apps & Websites > Restrictions.
- Select the app you want to restrict, tap Block App, and confirm.
Apple’s newer child-safety controls let a parent or guardian manage restrictions from their own device. The adult must be the Family Sharing organizer or a designated parent/guardian, and the child must have an Apple Account in the family group. The blocked app remains installed but is hidden or dimmed until access is allowed again. See Apple’s instructions for blocking or allowing apps on a child’s device.
If you don’t see the Family restrictions menu
Set up or adjust Screen Time directly on the child’s device. Open Settings > Screen Time, choose the child if prompted, and turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions. Then use the app and feature controls shown on that iOS version. Apple also documents managing a child’s settings through Screen Time on a family member’s device; the available route depends on the device and account setup. Start with Apple’s parental-control setup instructions or its Screen Time guide for a child.
Apple’s newer parental-control experience may require current operating-system versions across compatible devices in the family group. If the family cannot update every device, Apple says families can continue with the previous Screen Time experience or change controls on the child’s device. Age and country or region can also affect defaults and which settings are available, so the labels may not match exactly.

Set a Screen Time passcode
A Screen Time passcode helps keep restrictions in place. When Screen Time is configured directly on the child’s device, Apple says an Apple Account can be used to reset a forgotten Screen Time passcode. Follow Apple’s instructions for setting up Screen Time for a child.
Choose the control that matches what you want to stop
Blocking, limiting, and scheduling are different controls. Use the one that fits the situation:

Blocking an app already on the device does not by itself control what can be downloaded or purchased, and app restrictions are not website filters. To address downloads or purchases, open the Screen Time content and purchase controls and choose the restrictions available on the child’s device. Ask to Buy can require approval for supported downloads and in-app purchases, but it is separate from Screen Time restrictions and its eligibility varies. For web access, use the website controls, such as URL blocking, Limit Adult Websites, or Approved Websites Only, where available. Check whether settings apply across the child’s devices
If the child uses more than one device signed in to the same Apple Account, Screen Time’s Share Across Devices setting can apply settings or schedules across them when enabled. Check the account and this setting if a restriction appears to affect another device or fails to appear where expected. Apple explains Share Across Devices in its Screen Time guide.
