If you forgot your iPhone passcode, there is no supported way to open the locked phone while keeping its local data intact. First try Apple’s temporary passcode-reset option if you recently changed the code. Otherwise, you’ll need to erase and reset the iPhone, then restore from a backup if one is available. Erasing does not remove Activation Lock: you may still need the Apple Account linked to the device.

First, check whether your previous passcode still works

If you changed your passcode recently, try Apple’s Passcode Reset before erasing the iPhone. On iOS 17 or later, Apple allows the previous passcode to be used for up to 72 hours after a change. If the iPhone accepts it, follow the prompts to set a new passcode. Apple describes this as a way to regain access without a computer or device reset in its Passcode Reset guidance.

This option applies only within the stated window after a qualifying passcode change. It is not a way to bypass a forgotten passcode indefinitely.

Reset the iPhone from the lock screen

If the iPhone displays “iPhone Unavailable” or “Security Lockout,” an on-device reset may be available on iOS 15.2 or later. Apple requires Find My to have been enabled before the lockout, an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection, and the Apple Account password associated with the device. The exact button and prompts vary by iOS version; look for “Forgot Passcode?” or the reset option shown on the screen. Follow the prompts to erase the iPhone and confirm with the linked Apple Account credentials. Apple’s instructions are in If you forgot your iPhone passcode.

This process permanently erases the iPhone’s data and settings. During setup, you can restore from a backup if you have one. If the reset option does not appear or its requirements are not met, use a computer instead.

Reset the iPhone with a computer

Apple’s computer-based reset is the alternative when the lock-screen method is unavailable. You need a Mac or Windows PC, an internet connection, and a cable that can charge your iPhone. The right cable depends on the iPhone model and computer; there is no single connector type for every setup. Follow Apple’s current steps in Use a computer to reset your iPhone and your passcode.

A computer reset erases data currently stored on the iPhone. Apple gives an estimate of up to 60 minutes for the process; actual completion time can vary, so treat that as an estimate rather than a guarantee. If a backup is available, you can restore it during setup after the reset.

Know which password is being requested

  • iPhone passcode: The code used to unlock the screen. The reset routes erase the device when the passcode cannot be recovered through Passcode Reset.
  • Apple Account password: The account credential Apple may require to authorize an on-device reset and to reactivate the iPhone afterward.
  • Activation Lock: An ownership protection that can remain after an erase. It is not removed by resetting the iPhone.

Apple says the linked Apple Account password is required before someone can turn off Find My, erase the device, or reactivate and use it. See Activation Lock for iPhone and iPad.

If the iPhone is linked to someone else’s account

For a secondhand iPhone that asks for a previous owner’s Apple Account during setup, contact that person and ask them to remove the device from their account. Apple advises against taking ownership while it remains linked. A reset or remote erase does not bypass Activation Lock, and you cannot complete activation without the linked owner’s authorization.

Choose the right recovery route

Route When it may work What you need Effect on local data
Passcode Reset The passcode was changed recently and the iPhone is running iOS 17 or later; the previous passcode may work for up to 72 hours after the change. The previous passcode. Does not require a reset if successful.
Lock-screen reset The iPhone shows the reset option and runs iOS 15.2 or later. Find My previously enabled, an active network connection, and the linked Apple Account password. Erases data and settings; a backup may be restored during setup.
Computer reset The lock-screen route is unavailable or cannot be completed. A Mac or Windows PC, internet access, and a cable that can charge the iPhone. Erases data on the iPhone; a backup may be restored during setup.
