The best pCloud alternative depends on what you want to improve: Proton Drive is the privacy-led pick, Google Drive and OneDrive fit their respective productivity ecosystems, Dropbox is a familiar choice for syncing and sharing, and Sync.com is another option for privacy-conscious users. These are use-case matches, not results of a new head-to-head test; other services, including IDrive and self-hosted Nextcloud, may also suit some people.
How to choose a pCloud alternative
Start with what matters most in your current setup: storage capacity, privacy, collaboration, sharing controls, recovery options, or the apps and devices you already use. Then compare plans on the same basis. A bundle that includes office apps, email, AI features, or multiple family accounts is not directly comparable to a storage-only plan.
- Check the full cost: compare the actual billing period and your region, not just a monthly equivalent or a temporary promotion.
- Check what the storage covers: some plans share capacity across several services or allocate it among family members.
- Review the privacy model: “encrypted” does not by itself establish that a provider cannot access file contents. Look for a precise explanation of how encryption works.
- Consider everyday workflows: check file syncing, sharing permissions, recovery and versioning, document editing, collaboration, and supported platforms.
- Plan for the move: shared folders, existing links, and connected devices may need attention in addition to the files themselves.
The five best pCloud alternatives
1. Proton Drive: best for privacy-first storage
Proton describes Drive as using end-to-end encryption and says it supports password-protected or expiring share links, browser, desktop, and mobile access, and automatic photo backup. The product page checked October 7, 2026 showed 5 GB on the free plan and 200 GB for Drive Plus; its retrieved price was incomplete, so check the current price for your region before choosing a plan. These are Proton’s stated features, not an independent security assessment. See Proton Drive’s product details.

Proton also offers document and spreadsheet editing. It says its documents are end-to-end encrypted by default. This may appeal if privacy is a priority but you still want to work with files online.

How to switch without losing access to files
- Inventory what you use. Note your files, shared folders, links, and devices connected to pCloud.
- Check the replacement against your workflow. Confirm it supports the platforms, sharing, and collaboration features you rely on.
- Move a small test folder first. Upload it, then download and open the files to confirm the transfer worked.
- Keep the original copy during the transition. Do not remove old files until you have verified the new copies and checked that shared workflows still work.
- Keep a separate backup of important data. Syncing between devices is not a substitute for an independent backup.
When self-hosted Nextcloud may make more sense
Nextcloud is a different kind of alternative: instead of subscribing to one of the hosted services above, you choose where to host it and take responsibility for deployment, security, and ongoing maintenance. Its official installation guide explains the software-install path, but compatibility with a particular NAS model is not established here. Read the Nextcloud installation guide.
