Start by identifying which IDrive workflow failed and recording its exact error. A cloud or local backup, IDrive Mirror, and a failure affecting only selected files can have different causes; a Mirror-specific snapshot fix is not a general remedy for every IDrive backup problem.
Identify what failed before changing settings
Open the activity log or backup summary and note the exact error text or code, the affected file or drive, and whether the job was online backup, local backup, or IDrive Mirror. Also record whether the whole job failed or only particular files. IDrive’s Mirror error-code guide applies to IDrive Mirror, not every IDrive product.
- Whole job: Check for a connection, service, source-drive, or Mirror snapshot/read error.
- Selected files: Check file-level log entries for access rights, unavailable paths, or skipped files.
- Unclear status: Compare the summary with the detailed log; a summary alone may not reveal which files were missed.
Check the connection and backup source
Confirm the computer is online and that each selected source is available at the time the job runs. IDrive documents an unavailable network connection as the cause associated with the Mirror code SOCKET_START_ERROR; its listed remedy is to check the client machine’s internet connection and try again.
For a Mac backup, IDrive says mapped, USB, and external drives must be included in the backup set and available when the backup runs. If the job concerns an external drive, check that it is connected, mounted, and accessible before retrying. Do not change power-management settings as a blanket fix: the documentation establishes source availability as a requirement, not a universal sleep-setting remedy.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Investigate file and folder permissions
When only some items fail, inspect the file-level log and access rights rather than treating the entire job as a connection failure. IDrive’s Mac FAQ says files or folders without sufficient access may be skipped. Depending on the “Ignore file/folder level access rights/permission errors” setting, permission errors may instead be marked failed and affect the final status. Windows mapped-drive permissions can also cause failures.
The Mac FAQ’s guidance applies to accounts created after September 25, 2026, and available behavior can depend on the account and setting. For other accounts or client versions, confirm the applicable help page and the setting label in your installed app.

Restart the Windows service only if the backup engine stopped
If the specific symptom is that the Windows IDrive backup engine has stopped, IDrive’s FAQ for client series 6 and below gives this service restart procedure:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and open the Services console. - Locate
IDriveService. - If it is stopped, start the service, then retry the backup and check its log.
This instruction is version-qualified: the FAQ identifies itself as covering series 6 and below, so newer clients may use different labels or behavior. Do not restart or alter unrelated services for an unexplained backup failure.

Use the matching IDrive Mirror error-code remedy
These remedies are specific to IDrive Mirror. Match the code in the log before using them; do not apply Windows VSS or snapshot commands to an ordinary online or local file-backup failure.
| Mirror error | What IDrive associates with it | Low-risk next step |
|---|---|---|
SOCKET_START_ERROR |
The client machine’s network connection is unavailable. | Check the internet connection and retry. |
BLOCK_READ_ERROR |
A device may be busy or hung. | Restart the backup. If the error persists, check the disk. |
BLOCK_READ_CRC_ERROR |
Possible bad sectors. | Check the affected volume; escalate if the problem continues. |
SNAPSHOT_DELETED |
Possible causes include low free disk space, stale snapshots from competing backup software, or insufficient shadow storage. | Check free space and follow the matching guidance in IDrive’s Mirror error-code guide before changing snapshot or shadow-storage settings. |
| Other VSS provider or snapshot errors | The cause and remedy depend on the exact code. | Follow the corresponding IDrive instructions or contact support rather than applying a general VSS fix. |
Snapshot and shadow-copy changes can affect recovery points. Do not delete all Windows shadow copies as a routine troubleshooting step; use an action only when the exact Mirror error guidance calls for it and you understand its consequences.

Escalate with the information support needs
If the matching low-risk checks do not resolve the issue, send IDrive support the exact error code or message, a relevant log excerpt, your operating system and IDrive workflow, and the steps already tried. IDrive’s FAQ provides a support form and describes sending an error report. For a product-specific problem, use the help page for your installed client and account rather than assuming a version 6, Mac-account, and Mirror instruction applies universally.

A local backup to an external hard drive can provide an additional copy, but it is an alternative destination—not a fix for cloud connection, permissions, or Mirror snapshot errors. IDrive documents local backup and local-drive restore workflows; for a Mac source, the drive must also be selected and available when the job runs.
