There is no single best iTerm2 replacement: choose based on whether you want a lean terminal, built-in workflow and AI features, coding-agent coordination, or cross-platform configuration. Ghostty, Warp, cmux, jebi, and Pluto Door appear on Product Hunt’s alternatives list; WezTerm, kitty, and Alacritty are additional options for developers comparing terminal platforms and configuration styles.
The right choice depends on the work you do and the trade-offs you accept. A terminal focused on simplicity is a different proposition from one that adds accounts, cloud services, AI, or an opinionated workspace UI.
How to choose an iTerm2 alternative
Start with the job you need the terminal to do, rather than a claim that one app is universally faster or better. Consider these questions:
- Do you want a traditional terminal or built-in workflow features? Some alternatives emphasize terminal rendering and a lean interface; others add command blocks, saved workflows, or workspace management.
- Do you need macOS only, or several operating systems? Platform support varies, so check the current project documentation for the systems you actually use.
- How do you handle multiple sessions? Built-in panes, tabs, workspaces, tmux, and window managers are different ways to organize terminal work.
- What are your privacy and account requirements? If an app includes cloud or AI features, check its account requirements and data controls before adopting it for sensitive work.
- Do you rely on SSH, terminal protocols, or automation? Verify compatibility with your shell, remote hosts, TTY-dependent tools, and any scripts or integrations you already use.
Product Hunt’s alternatives page also points to rendering responsiveness, session ergonomics, configurability, and SSH workflows as comparison criteria. Its list is an editorial roundup, not a benchmark or exhaustive catalog. Product Hunt’s iTerm2 alternatives

iTerm2 alternatives by workflow
| Priority | Option | Why it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| A lean daily terminal | Ghostty | Product Hunt positions Ghostty around GPU rendering and strong defaults. | Check current OS support, terminal protocol compatibility, and the specific features you use. |
| Command blocks, saved workflows, AI, or team features | Warp | Product Hunt highlights command blocks, reusable workflows, integrated AI, and cross-platform use. | Review account and cloud expectations, data controls, plan limits, and current prices. |
| Coordinating coding-agent sessions | cmux | Product Hunt describes it as focused on managing agent-oriented workspaces and attention cues. | Confirm that it works with your shell and fits your existing terminal workflow; available descriptions are not a compatibility test. |
| A local-first terminal AI workflow | jebi | Product Hunt describes on-device assistance that does not require an API key. | Verify privacy behavior and product requirements directly before using it with sensitive material. |
| SSH, files, and editing in one workspace | Pluto Door | Product Hunt describes an integrated SSH, file-browser, and editing workflow. | Check that its remote workflow and security model meet your needs. |
| Configurable terminal across operating systems | WezTerm or kitty | A September 2026 comparison describes broad platform support and configurable workflows for both. | Confirm the current platform matrix and any protocol or configuration requirements in official documentation. |
| A minimal terminal paired with tmux or a window manager | Alacritty | The comparison describes a deliberately minimal interface without built-in tabs or splits. | Check current documentation and be comfortable using tmux or a window manager for multiplexing. |
This is a shortlist based on product descriptions and a dated comparison, not a hands-on test. No performance benchmark establishes which app is faster or more reliable for your particular workload.
How the alternatives differ from iTerm2
iTerm2: macOS-focused features
A comparison published by Oxide Terminal and checked in September 2026 describes iTerm2 as macOS-only. It lists triggers, searchable profiles, inline images, a Python API, tmux integration, and session restoration. Because that comparison is published by another terminal vendor, use it as a starting point and check the project documentation if one of these features is decisive. Oxide Terminal’s comparison

Ghostty and Warp: different kinds of additions
Ghostty’s stated appeal is a lean, GPU-rendered terminal with strong defaults. Warp takes a more feature-rich approach, emphasizing command blocks, reusable workflows, AI assistance, and cross-platform availability. These are product descriptions, not independently measured results; choose by the interface and capabilities you want, then test the tools and shell behavior you depend on. Is an alternative better than the built-in Mac Terminal?
That depends on what you need beyond a terminal window. A user asking about the advantage of Ghostty or iTerm2 over the built-in Mac Terminal is one example of the question, not evidence of a universal advantage. The April 3, 2026 Reddit discussion
Compare the specific capabilities you use: session organization, profiles, automation, rendering behavior, remote workflows, and compatibility with your command-line tools. If the built-in app already supports your workflow, switching may add little. If you need a feature it lacks, choose an alternative that supplies it without adding unwanted complexity or privacy trade-offs.
Quick Recap
A practical way to shortlist and test
- Write down must-haves. Note the operating systems, shell, SSH usage, session-management approach, and any integrations or terminal behaviors your work depends on.
- Pick two or three candidates by workflow. Use the shortlist above to narrow the field instead of installing every alternative.
- Verify requirements in primary documentation. Check current platform support, protocol compatibility, account needs, privacy controls, and pricing for the features you plan to use.
- Try your real tasks. Open the same project, run the same shell commands, connect to the same remote environments, and test any scripts or tools that rely on TTY behavior.
- Keep a rollback path. Retain your existing terminal configuration until you know how the new app handles profiles, shortcuts, sessions, and settings.
