There is no single image size that fits every Facebook placement. Choose dimensions for the specific cover, profile picture, post, Story, event, group, link image, or ad; then set the crop, export, and preview it in Facebook. The figures below are recommendations reported by third-party guides, not a universal set of official requirements. In particular, an ad specification should not be mistaken for an organic-post rule.
Which Facebook image size should you use?
Start with the placement and its shape, not a generic “Facebook size.” The recommendations below differ by source and use case. The 2026 Businessman Talk guide reports some figures as Meta guidance, but the primary Meta Help Centre and Ads Guide pages were not directly checked for this article. Canva and PhotoResizerr publish their own recommendations; those are useful starting points, not proof of a platform requirement.

How to resize an image for Facebook for free
- Choose the placement. Decide whether the image is for a Page cover, profile picture, feed post, ad, event, group, Story, or link preview. Use the matching row above rather than assuming all Facebook images share a canvas.
- Open a resizer or design tool. For a straightforward resize, choose a tool that lets you enter custom pixel dimensions and inspect or reposition the crop. PhotoResizerr describes custom pixel entry, cropping, conversion, export controls, and placement presets; check its current privacy statement and free-plan terms before uploading. PhotoResizerr
- Set the target shape. Enter the dimensions for your placement, or select a clearly labeled preset. If the original image has a different aspect ratio, crop it deliberately instead of stretching it. Keep faces, logos, and text inside the visible area.
- Adjust and inspect the crop. Move the image within the frame until the important content is visible. For a Page cover, Businessman Talk reports that desktop and mobile crops differ and identifies a lower-left overlap area; keep essential content centered and away from edges, then check the result on a phone and desktop. - Export and upload. Export in a format suitable for the image and upload it to the intended Facebook placement. - Preview in Facebook before publishing. Check that the platform’s displayed crop preserves the subject and any text. If something is cut off, return to the source and recrop rather than expecting Facebook to show the entire original canvas.
Which free resizer or design tool should you choose?
- For a quick crop and resize: Choose a browser resizer with custom pixel dimensions and controls for repositioning the crop. Presets can save time, but they are the tool publisher’s convenience, not proof of an official Facebook requirement. What to check before publishing
- The selected dimensions match the intended Facebook placement, rather than an unrelated ad or cover preset.
- The image is cropped rather than stretched if its original shape differs from the target.
- Text, faces, and logos remain inside the visible area, including the circular profile-picture crop and any cover crop.
- The uploaded version looks right in Facebook on the device or placement that matters to you.
- You have checked current platform guidance where a precise specification or file-format rule is important, because the dimensions in third-party guides can differ and may change.
