SoundGate maker Aren Barseghyan says the guitar-practice app saw onboarding drop-off below 1% after launch. He credits a short, user-focused flow, but the Product Hunt discussion gives no denominator, measurement window, or detailed definition of drop-off—and the team did not test a parallel version. The figure is a maker-reported observation, not independently verified evidence that the design caused the result.
What SoundGate’s onboarding was designed to do
Product Hunt describes SoundGate Guitar as an app for guitar practice, with real-time visual feedback, an interactive fretboard, and an AI tutor. In his Product Hunt post and replies, maker Aren Barseghyan says the team kept onboarding brief and focused on getting users into an experience suited to them.
Barseghyan explained the approach through three principles:

- UX over marketing: prioritize what someone needs to get started rather than collecting information primarily useful to marketing.
- Vibe is a feature: let the first interaction convey the app’s musical character.
The retained questions, he said, helped route users to the right flow and give the AI tutor context. That offers a practical distinction: ask for information when it changes what the user experiences now, rather than simply because it could be useful to the business later.

What the under-1% figure does—and does not—show
Barseghyan said the team checked its analytics after launch and saw onboarding drop-off below 1%. He also said the team had not set a numeric target in advance: “We actually didn’t set any numeric target! We just focused on the experience.”
The Product Hunt discussion does not state how many users were measured, the period covered, how “drop-off” was defined, or how the events were instrumented. It also provides no breakdown by acquisition source. Those omissions make it impossible to assess the figure’s scope or compare it reliably with another product’s onboarding rate.

Barseghyan described completion as steady across the steps, with no single bottleneck. He considered the brief, high-value flow the main driver, but the team did not run another onboarding version in parallel. Without that comparison, the reported analytics cannot establish that the design choices caused the result.
Where to draw the line between UX and marketing data
SoundGate’s stated decision rule is to keep a question when its answer changes the user’s immediate route or gives the tutor context needed to respond usefully. If information does not affect setup, routing, or the first useful interaction, collecting it before a user can begin adds friction without a demonstrated immediate benefit.

That does not mean marketing data is never useful. It means the initial flow is a poor place to ask for information solely for later marketing use when the user cannot yet see what they will get in return. A team can defer those questions until they are relevant, or make the value exchange clear when asking.

- Completion by step: identify where users leave rather than relying only on an overall rate.
- Time to a useful first interaction: track how long it takes a new user to reach a meaningful practice or product outcome.
- Information that changes the experience: review each question and document whether its answer changes routing, setup, or tutor behavior.
These are suggested evaluation axes, not measurements reported for SoundGate. To determine whether removing or changing a question improves outcomes, compare versions under a defined measurement plan and interpret the result alongside the user experience—not as proof from a single post-launch figure.
