To use Canva with Buffer, open Buffer’s desktop post composer, choose Canva from the integrations menu, create a new design or open an existing Canva project, and click Return to Buffer. The image is then attached to your post, and you finish the text and schedule, queue, or publish it from Buffer. Buffer remains the scheduling and publishing surface; Canva is where the graphic is designed.
Setting up Canva in Buffer’s composer
The workflow runs in Buffer’s desktop composer. Follow these steps in order:
- In Buffer on desktop, open the post composer and select the social channel or channels the post is for.
- Open the integrations menu and choose Canva. If Canva asks you to sign in, complete the sign-in before continuing.
- Create a new design, or open an existing Canva project.
- Click Return to Buffer. The design is added to the post as an image.
- Finish the post text, customize the content for each network if needed, and then schedule it, add it to the queue, or publish it.
Buffer describes this integration as first-party and says it is included with its Free plan. Plan inclusions can change, so check Buffer’s current plan and feature pages before you rely on them for a client or team workflow.
Who the integration suits
The integration is aimed at Canva users, creators, and small teams who want Canva graphics in posts scheduled through Buffer. It fits static graphics well, and it is useful when you want to pick image dimensions for each network. It is not a mobile workflow: Canva is not built into Buffer’s iOS or Android apps, so start and finish these posts on a desktop browser.

Limits to check before you design
Most problems people hit with this integration come from assumptions about file types, asset access, and video. Check these points before you start a design.
Only PNG images, one at a time
According to Buffer’s guidance, the integration accepts PNG images, one at a time. If a campaign needs several graphics, return each design as its own post image rather than expecting a batch transfer.
Brand Kit is not reachable from Buffer
Buffer states that its Canva Brand Kit cannot be accessed through the integration. If your brand colours, logos, or fonts live in Brand Kit, open Canva separately to apply them, then return the finished PNG to Buffer.

Square designs for multi-channel posts
When you create a post for several channels in Buffer’s Omnibox workflow, the integration generates a 1080 × 1080 square image. For a single channel, the composer offers that network’s template sizes instead. Sizes are covered in the table below.
Animated designs can arrive as stills
An animated Canva design may be attached as a still image. Buffer’s stated workaround is to export the design as an MP4 from Canva and upload that file manually. Buffer says it supports publishing MP4 video, so the manual upload is the route to an animated post.
Editing after you schedule
Designs made through the integration can be reopened from queued or sent posts, edited in Canva, and returned to Buffer. Each channel’s queued copy has to be edited separately. A post that was added to Buffer without the integration does not have this Canva edit control, so reuploading a fresh image is the only way to change it.

Canva’s own scheduler: Content Planner
Canva also has its own scheduler, Content Planner, which is separate from Buffer. Canva’s Help Center says scheduling is available to specified paid, education, and nonprofit account types. Each design can be scheduled to only one platform at a time. Platform availability varies, so check it in the Canva editor before you plan a campaign around it.
Instagram requirements in Content Planner
Canva’s documented Instagram scheduling flow requires an Instagram Business account linked to a Facebook Page. Canva says Creator accounts are not supported in this flow, and scheduled Stories, Reels, and galleries are not supported either. These are Canva’s current documented constraints and may change with platform updates.

Choosing between Buffer’s integration and Content Planner
The two routes solve different problems. Compare them on the points below.
