A responder opening a 3 AM page should not have to ask, “where do I even start?” A useful incident dashboard puts the current incident, its owner, the signal that triggered it, and safe next actions in one view. PagerDuty documents workflows that can support this design; the layout recommendations below are design guidance, not an official PagerDuty interface specification.
Start with the incident, not a wall of alerts
A qualifying event can trigger an alert, which may then trigger an incident. Multiple alerts can be grouped into one incident for triage, so the dashboard should make both levels visible: the incident responders are managing and the underlying signals that contributed to it. PagerDuty describes Alert Grouping and Event Orchestration as controls for moving, suppressing, or deduplicating alerts. Its documentation says, “You can aggregate multiple alerts into a single incident for triage, which streamlines incident handoff between teams, centralizes critical information, and reduces notification fatigue.” That is PagerDuty’s description of its feature, not an independent measurement of impact. PagerDuty Alerts documentation
Put the highest-urgency open incident first
Design recommendation: At the top of the responder view, show the highest-urgency open incident, current status, affected service, owner, and escalation information. PagerDuty’s incident workflows include urgency and on-call information; these details help the responder see what needs attention and who is responsible without searching across pages. PagerDuty’s guide to the Incidents page
Keep grouped alerts and their provenance visible
Design recommendation: Show the triggering signal and grouped alerts alongside the incident summary, with links to the relevant source-monitoring views. Grouping can reduce clutter, but hiding the individual alerts or where they originated makes it harder to verify whether they belong together. Preserve the distinction between an incident and its underlying alerts instead of flattening both into one unexplained count.

Make the next safe action obvious
PagerDuty’s incident page supports actions including acknowledging, reassigning, resolving, snoozing, and merging incidents. Build the responder view around these real workflow choices rather than presenting a generic AI chat box as the main control surface. PagerDuty’s guide to the Incidents page
- Acknowledge or claim: Make the action prominent when a responder is taking ownership. Show the resulting owner or status clearly.
- Reassign: Keep the reassignment action close to ownership and escalation details so a responder can route an incident when the current assignment is wrong.
- Snooze: Offer this when it is appropriate to defer an alert, and make its effect clear so it is not mistaken for resolution.
- Resolve: Keep resolution distinct from acknowledgement. The responder should resolve only when the incident is confirmed resolved.
- Merge: Make related incidents easy to combine when they represent the same underlying issue, while retaining access to their constituent information.
Design recommendation: Use clear labels and distinguish actions with materially different effects. In particular, acknowledgement, snoozing, and resolution should not look interchangeable.

Use AI to accelerate triage without obscuring evidence
PagerDuty describes AI-assisted prioritization and routing, along with named PagerDuty Advance agents for incident triage, diagnosis, remediation, knowledge capture, on-call conflict management, and operational recommendations. PagerDuty’s Operations Cloud page describes the SRE Agent as detecting, triaging, diagnosing, and remediating incidents; Scribe Agent as capturing knowledge from conference bridges and incident-related chats; Shift Agent as detecting on-call conflicts and managing overrides; and Insights Agent as offering recommendations. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evidence of effectiveness. Availability and exact behavior should be checked for the intended plan and deployment. PagerDuty Operations Cloud

Separate observations from AI-generated interpretation
Design recommendation: Label generated summaries, hypotheses, and recommendations as AI output. Keep the source events, monitoring links, and relevant incident updates close to each finding, so responders can check what the system observed before acting. Make confirmed actions visually distinct from suggestions; do not imply that a generated diagnosis or proposed remediation is verified simply because it appears in the incident view.

Keep consequential actions under responder control
Design recommendation: Treat an AI suggestion as assistance, not as confirmation that an incident is resolved or a remediation is safe. Present the evidence and expected consequence of an action before asking the responder to confirm it. The available PagerDuty descriptions do not establish a universal confirmation model for every AI capability, so the interface should communicate the actual behavior configured in the reader’s deployment.
Separate live response from historical analytics
PagerDuty’s Analytics Dashboard documents account-wide MTTA, MTTR, and interruption trends, with breakdowns by service, escalation policy, team, and responder. Availability depends on plan. These metrics describe historical performance; they are not a live diagnostic feed for the incident currently being handled. PagerDuty Analytics Dashboard documentation

Design recommendation: Keep trend panels in a separate area or clearly distinct region of the dashboard. Label the reporting time basis and avoid placing account-wide historical averages where they could be confused with this incident’s current status or elapsed response time.
Reduce context switching with relevant integrations
PagerDuty describes itself as managing response workflows while monitoring tools detect issues. Its Operations Cloud page lists Datadog and Splunk among observability examples, ServiceNow for ITSM, Slack and Microsoft Teams for collaboration, and AWS for cloud. It also describes MCP and open APIs. These examples do not establish that a particular integration is included or configured in every account; check the current plan and deployment. Design recommendation: Surface only the monitoring, collaboration, and ITSM destinations that matter to your service and connected stack. Link out to the authoritative source view rather than copying a fragment of its data without provenance. A responder should be able to inspect relevant telemetry or incident discussion without hunting through an unrelated integration catalog.
Design the dashboard around PagerDuty’s full response lifecycle
PagerDuty’s incident-management scope includes detection, response, communications, analytics, and post-incident learning, alongside on-call schedules and escalation policies. The dashboard should support more than the first acknowledgement: the right owner must be identifiable, the response must be coordinated, and useful incident information must remain available for review and learning. PagerDuty Incident Management documentation
- Detection and triage: Show the incident and its underlying alerts together, with source links.
- Ownership and escalation: Make the current responder, urgency, and escalation context easy to locate.
- Response and communications: Link the relevant connected collaboration and service-management context.
- Learning: Keep historical analytics and post-incident information accessible without presenting them as live incident evidence.
A practical review checklist
- Can a responder identify the highest-urgency open incident, service, owner, status, and escalation state at a glance?
- Can they see which alerts are grouped into that incident and open the monitoring source for each relevant signal?
- Are acknowledgement, reassignment, snoozing, resolution, and merging clear, distinct actions?
- Are AI summaries and recommendations labeled separately from observed events and confirmed actions?
- Are live incident details visually separate from historical MTTA, MTTR, and interruption trends?
- Are integration links limited to the tools actually relevant and configured for the organization?
- Have AI-agent functions, integrations, and plan availability been verified for the specific PagerDuty deployment?
What the design evidence does—and does not—establish
PagerDuty’s Incident Management marketing page states that incidents can be resolved 70% faster, cites 249% return on investment from incidents solved faster, and says there is a 12-month payback. The page’s headline claims do not establish a publication year or methodology in the available information, so they should be treated as PagerDuty marketing claims rather than independent benchmarks or guaranteed outcomes.
