Gboard lag and Gboard changing your words are two different problems with two different fixes. If keys respond late, freeze, or misfire, update Gboard and clear its cache. If the keyboard keeps altering words you typed correctly, open Text correction and turn off only the feature causing the change. Google’s support pages do not publish a measured typing-speed gain for any of these changes, so the goal is to remove friction, not to hit a promised words-per-minute figure.
Work out which problem you have
Match your symptom to the likely cause before changing anything. Testing one change at a time makes it clear what actually helped.

Find the settings
Android
- Open any app with a text field and tap into it so the keyboard appears.
- Open the keyboard’s feature menu, then choose More > Settings.
- Alternatively, use Android Settings: System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard.
Menu names differ on customised Android versions and on some manufacturers’ phones. If the labels in Google’s steps do not match your screen, check your device maker’s documentation.

- Open the Gboard app and tap Keyboard settings.
- To install keyboards, change their order, or manage languages, go to iOS Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
Stop Gboard from changing words you meant to type
Unwanted changes are almost always caused by a text correction feature, not by lag. Adjust these controls individually. Turning off every suggestion is broader than most readers need, and it also removes help you may want.

On Android
Open Text correction and turn off Smart Compose or Auto-capitalisation if either one is altering your text. If you still want predictions, turn on Show suggestion strip so suggestions remain visible without automatic replacement.
On iPhone and iPad
Google’s setup help exposes controls for Auto-correction and Character preview. Suggestion types can also be managed in Keyboard settings. Turn off the one that is changing your words, then type a test sentence in a text field before deciding whether it helped.
Teach Gboard a term it keeps changing
For a name, brand, or technical term you use often, add it to the dictionary. This is more reliable than disabling correction across the board when the problem is one recurring word.

Cut down language switching and interrupted suggestions
Each active language gives Gboard more candidates to choose between, which can make predictions switch unexpectedly. Keep only the languages you use regularly active.
- Android: Google’s Gboard troubleshooting help states, “For smoother typing, stick to one or two active languages.”
- iPhone and iPad: Gboard supports up to three languages at a time, according to Google’s Gboard setup help for iPhone and iPad.
Before you conclude that prediction is broken, check the selected language and keyboard layout. A wrong layout produces errors that look like autocorrect problems.
Try glide typing if it suits you
Glide typing, also called slide typing, lets you trace a path across the letters of a word and lift your finger to enter it. It is worth trying if you find tapping slow, but it is not a guaranteed speed boost. Google’s glide-typing help states, “Not all languages work with this feature.” If the option is missing for your language, it is not available there.

Fix lag and misfiring keys
Work through these steps in order. Stop when the keyboard responds normally, and retest after each one.
- Update Gboard through Google Play on Android or the App Store on iPhone and iPad. An outdated build is the simplest cause to rule out.
- Clear the cache. On Android, open Gboard’s app page in Android Settings, go to its storage section, and choose Clear cache. Labels vary by device. Clearing the cache leaves your settings and learned words in place.
- Turn off personalisation, one of the troubleshooting steps Google lists, and test typing again.
- Adjust Text correction using the controls in the correction section above, since correction processing can slow some typing.
Later steps: clearing data and reinstalling
Clearing Gboard’s data or storage is different from clearing the cache. It resets Gboard to its default state, so your settings and learned behaviour will reset too. Use it only after the steps above have failed, and expect to reconfigure your languages and preferences afterwards.
Reinstalling is the final documented fallback. Before you uninstall Gboard, make sure another keyboard is available. Google advises this when Gboard is the only keyboard installed, because you could otherwise be left without a working input method.

Platform and feature limits
- Labels vary. Android menu names depend on the device maker and Android version. Google directs users of custom Android versions to their manufacturer when steps do not match.
- iOS baseline. Google’s setup help for iPhone and iPad lists iOS 9 and later. That is the help page’s stated baseline, so check the App Store listing for the current requirement.
- Proofread with Gboard is documented by Google for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, in English, in the United States. It is an optional writing aid, not a fix for keyboard lag.
- Advanced voice typing has device and language limits. Check Google’s advanced voice typing help before relying on it.
Voice features and privacy
Google’s advanced voice typing help says that detailed voice edits send both the voice-command transcript and the full text from the input field to Google servers for processing. Consider that before using detailed edits on sensitive text.
Google’s Android privacy help says that words Gboard learns are stored on the device. The same help describes searches, usage statistics, and talk-to-text transcription as data sent to Google. Those are separate categories, so a setting that limits one does not necessarily limit the others.

What to leave with
- Treat lag and unwanted corrections as separate problems.
- Disable the specific correction feature causing the change rather than all suggestions.
- Keep one or two active languages on Android, or up to three on iPhone and iPad.
- Clear the cache before clearing data, and remember that clearing data resets Gboard.
