A room used to learn, teach, or practice dance is usually called a dance studio. If its main purpose is preparing choreography or a performance, rehearsal room or rehearsal studio may be more precise. A dance hall or ballroom usually suggests a different kind of space.
Which name fits the space?
| Term | Usually suggests | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Dance studio | A space for dance instruction, practice, or rehearsal; it can also mean the larger dance school or establishment. | A general-purpose dance room. |
| Rehearsal room or rehearsal studio | A space used to prepare choreography or performance. | A room primarily used by performers or companies to rehearse. |
| Dance hall | Often a larger public or community space for social dancing. | A venue intended for group or social dancing, depending on local usage. |
| Ballroom | Often a formal dance venue, or a room associated with ballroom dancing. | A formal or ballroom-dance setting, not a general class room. |
These terms can overlap, and there is no single strict naming rule. For example, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland lists dance studios and rehearsal rooms, while English National Ballet uses “Rehearsal Studios” for its facility. When referring to a particular venue, its own name is the clearest choice.
Why “dance studio” is the best general term
“Dance studio” works for a room where people take lessons, teach classes, practice, or rehearse. Depending on context, it may refer to the room itself or to the broader dance establishment. If you are describing a specific room rather than the school or organization, say “dance studio room” only when needed for clarity; usually, “dance studio” is enough.
What you might find in a dance studio
Equipment and design vary by venue. Greater London Authority guidance on dance rehearsal facility design identifies floors, mirrors, barres, ventilation, heating, and access needs as considerations for professional dance spaces. Its 2019 guidance says, “These features are considered essential for professional dance uses.” That describes professional-use considerations, not a checklist every room called a dance studio must meet.

Specific venues illustrate the variation. Dance Ireland describes DanceHouse studios as spaces for rehearsals, classes, residencies, auditions, filming, performances, and creative development, with sprung floors, mirrors, and professional sound systems. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland lists playback systems and upright pianos in its dance studios. These are examples of possible facilities, not part of the definition of a dance studio.
Choosing the right wording
- Use dance studio for a general room used to learn, teach, or practice dance.
- Use rehearsal room or rehearsal studio when the purpose is preparing a performance.
- Use dance hall when the venue is chiefly for social or community dancing, if that matches its use.
- Use ballroom when the setting is formal or specifically associated with ballroom dancing.
- For a named venue, follow the venue’s own label.
“Room space” is a different phrase
In dance education, “room space” can describe the area dancers can move through, rather than the name of the facility. A dance glossary defines “General Space” as the available area through which a dancer can move and which is also available to other dancers; in a studio or room, it is also called “room space.”
