The latest announced Windows 11 feature update is version 26H2, which Microsoft made available to eligible PCs running Windows 11 versions 24H2 or 25H2 on September 29, 2026. Its broader improvements focus on File Explorer, responsiveness, customization, widgets, connectivity, accessibility, security and selected AI experiences. Access is not identical for everyone: Microsoft is using a controlled rollout, some changes remain in preview, and certain AI features are designed for Copilot+ PCs.

What is the latest Windows 11 update?

As of October 7, 2026, the latest announced Windows 11 feature update is the Windows 11 2026 Update, version 26H2. Microsoft says it is available to eligible devices already running version 24H2 or 25H2, subject to a controlled rollout and possible compatibility-related safeguard holds. An eligible PC may not be offered the update immediately. Microsoft’s 26H2 update instructions explain the rollout and eligibility.

For many eligible PCs, 26H2 is delivered as an enablement package: a small update that activates functionality already delivered through monthly servicing updates. Microsoft says the 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 releases share a servicing branch and codebase, so installing 26H2 on those devices is similar to installing a monthly update. The download and restart experience may therefore be brief, but Microsoft’s description does not guarantee the same installation time on every PC.

What’s new in Windows 11?

Microsoft’s recent quality updates describe a mix of refinements rather than one single change that will look the same on every PC. The status labels below matter: an improvement described as previewed or rolling out to Insiders is not necessarily available in the standard Windows release on your device.

Area What Microsoft has described Availability context
File Explorer Work on responsiveness, reliability, Home, the address bar, file-size display, keyboard navigation and renaming. Quality work has been reported across updates; individual changes may arrive at different times.
Context menu A redesigned menu intended to be faster, simpler and more customizable, with common actions easier to reach. Announced as rolling out to Windows Insiders on August 17, 2026; do not assume general availability.
Taskbar and Start Taskbar-position changes and more Start personalization. Previewed in Microsoft’s July 2026 quality update; availability can vary by build.
Widgets and feed A quieter-by-default experience with more user control. Previewed in Microsoft’s July 2026 quality update; rollout status depends on build.
Connectivity and responsiveness Quality work involving USB4 docking, Bluetooth-device compatibility, printer discovery and overall system responsiveness. Described qualitatively; no specific performance gain is established for all devices.
Accessibility, security and gaming Improvements in these areas are included among Microsoft’s broader Windows 11 rollout themes. Exact features and availability depend on the particular update and device.
AI experiences Some app-level AI changes and File Explorer actions, plus selected enhanced experiences on Copilot+ PCs. Requirements vary by feature; some app changes arrive through Microsoft Store updates.

File Explorer: reliability and everyday usability

Microsoft’s 2026 quality work targets hangs, delays and reliability issues while refining Home and common interactions. Its May update describes file sizes in Details view using suitable units such as KB, MB or GB rather than displaying them only in KB. It also describes address-bar handling for paths containing double backslashes and quotation marks. These are usability and reliability refinements, not a published guarantee of a particular speed improvement. Microsoft’s July quality progress update and its May quality update detail the work.

A redesigned File Explorer context menu

On August 17, 2026, Microsoft announced a redesigned context menu intended to reduce clutter at the top level, make common actions easier to find and let users control what appears. Microsoft described it as rolling out to Windows Insiders at announcement. That status means it should be treated as an Insider preview unless a later release notice confirms wider availability. Taskbar, Start and widgets

Microsoft’s July 2026 update said it had begun previewing changes that let users adjust taskbar position and personalize Start further. It also described preview work on a quieter-by-default widgets and feed experience with more user control. These reports identify ongoing and previewed work, not features guaranteed to appear in every 26H2 installation. Check the release information for your Windows build before following instructions for a particular setting.

Connectivity, accessibility, security and gaming

Microsoft’s quality reporting mentions improvements involving USB4 docking performance, compatibility with Bluetooth devices such as AirPods, printer discovery and system responsiveness. Its broader Windows 11 feature overview also groups rollouts around accessibility, gaming, and phishing and malware protection. The published descriptions do not provide a single measured gain or promise identical results across hardware. Microsoft’s overview of Windows 11 experiences describes those broader areas.

AI and Copilot experiences

Not every AI-related change is a new Copilot feature. Microsoft’s May 2026 progress post described removing the “Ask Copilot” button from Snipping Tool and Photos, and replacing Notepad’s generic Copilot icon with a clearer “Writing Tools” label. Microsoft said those app changes were rolling out through Microsoft Store updates. A separate October 2025 overview described File Explorer AI actions for selected image and document tasks, and identified some enhanced AI experiences as specific to Copilot+ PCs. Check the requirements for the individual feature and app version rather than assuming that every Windows 11 PC includes the same AI tools. Microsoft’s May progress report covers the app changes.

How do I get the Windows 11 2026 Update?

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available if you want Windows to offer new updates as soon as Microsoft makes them available to your device.
  3. Select Check for updates. If version 26H2 is offered, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
  4. If it is not offered, check again later. Microsoft is rolling out the update in stages and may temporarily hold it on devices with known compatibility issues.

The setting expresses your preference for receiving updates promptly; it does not bypass eligibility requirements or a safeguard hold. Microsoft’s 26H2 release guidance provides the current instructions.

Do I need a Copilot+ PC for Windows 11’s new features?

No—not for the general quality and usability improvements described here. The update’s availability is based on an eligible Windows 11 installation, and Microsoft describes broad work on File Explorer, connectivity, customization and reliability separately from hardware-specific AI experiences. Some AI features are explicitly for Copilot+ PCs, so check the particular feature’s requirements if that is what you want. The available material does not establish a need to buy a new PC for the general improvements in 26H2.

How long is Windows 11 version 26H2 supported?

Microsoft states that 26H2 resets the supported-edition lifecycle: 24 months for Home and Pro editions, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. These durations are lifecycle terms for the respective editions, not a claim that every device receives the update on the same date. Check Microsoft’s current lifecycle and release information for your edition before making support or upgrade plans.
