Yes, but only in a narrow sense. Apple and Samsung work together on specific manufacturing and supply work, and Apple has said so publicly. They do not run a joint phone, share a consumer brand, or stop competing. Samsung and Apple are rivals in smartphones, and their working relationship sits alongside that rivalry rather than replacing it.
What Apple has publicly confirmed
The clearest evidence comes from Apple’s own newsroom. In its August 6, 2025 announcement, “Apple increases U.S. commitment to $600 billion, announces ambitious program,” Apple said it was “working with Samsung at its fab in Austin, Texas, to launch an innovative new technology for making chips, which has never been used before anywhere in the world.” That sentence is Apple’s corporate wording. It is not an independent technical assessment, and Apple did not name the chip or the technology.
The same release listed Samsung among the initial partners of Apple’s American Manufacturing Program. Apple’s March 26, 2026 follow-up, “Apple adds new partners to its American Manufacturing Program,” still names Samsung as an initial partner. Together, these two Apple releases are the primary documentation of the relationship.

What the relationship is, and what it is not

The most accurate description is supplier and manufacturing cooperation between two companies that compete directly for customers. Calling it a merged business or a joint phone brand goes beyond what Apple disclosed. That distinction is an inference from the narrow scope of Apple’s statements, not a reported fact about the companies’ internal arrangements.

The competitive side: the patent dispute
The rivalry is documented in court. Apple and Samsung were parties to a long-running smartphone patent fight. In 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court decided Samsung Electronics Co. v. Apple Inc., a case about how damages are calculated for infringement of smartphone design patents.

The dispute ended in a settlement, but not a détente in the sense of cooperation. In June 2018, the companies told the court they had settled the remaining claims and counterclaims in the design-patent case. MacRumors reported the notice on June 27, 2018, and said the settlement terms were not disclosed. No settlement amount is publicly available from that source. The court filing itself is the primary record for the legal details, and this article relies on the reporting of that notice rather than on a directly reviewed copy of it.

A settled lawsuit does not show that the companies are allies. It shows only that one set of legal claims was resolved. The supply work and the patent history can both be true at once.

- What the chip does and how many units are involved.
- What Samsung is paid, and on what terms.
- Whether Apple has exclusive access to the technology.
Until Apple or Samsung discloses more, the accurate answer is that the work exists and is confirmed, while its scale and timing are unknown.
How to read future claims about an “alliance”
Headlines about Apple and Samsung tend to blur three different things. Use this checklist to sort them:
