An apparently empty Amazon Bedrock agent response does not identify one specific AWS failure. The text may be present in an event your application did not read or decode, the agent may have returned control for your application to perform an action, or the request may have surfaced an error instead of a final answer. Capture the full InvokeAgent response, enable tracing, and check the event fields before treating the symptom as a model-generation failure.
This article covers the documented InvokeAgent API used by existing Amazon Bedrock Agents Classic integrations. AWS says Agents Classic is no longer open to new customers, though existing customers can continue using it; check AWS’s current service and availability guidance if you are starting a new project or evaluating migration.
Start by inspecting the complete InvokeAgent response
Do not diagnose the issue from the string your application displays. The response is an event stream: the final response text is carried in the bytes field of a chunk event, and the result may also include trace data, return-control information, or an error. If your client reads the wrong event, exits before receiving a chunk, or fails to decode and accumulate the bytes, it can display nothing even when the API returned useful information.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCompare your event handling with AWS’s InvokeAgent response documentation and its SDK example, which iterates over completion, decodes chunk["bytes"], and appends the text to a response string. Log the event type and relevant fields while troubleshooting, taking care not to expose sensitive prompts or session data in production logs.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Distinguish completion, return control, and error
- Normal completion: Look for a
chunkevent and decode itsbytesvalue. - Return control: Look for invocation details indicating that the agent expects your application to perform an action.
- Error: Inspect the error information in the response rather than interpreting the absence of displayed text as proof that the agent returned a blank answer.
AWS documents the event fields and control flow in its InvokeAgent guide. The raw events are essential: the phrase “empty response” alone cannot establish which path occurred.
Enable trace to see how the agent handled the request
Set enableTrace to true in the InvokeAgent request. Trace is disabled by default; when enabled, trace information accompanies the response stream. It can help you follow orchestration steps and see whether the agent reached final response generation, called an action, or queried a knowledge base. AWS explains this in Test and troubleshoot agent behavior.

Use trace as diagnostic evidence about the agent’s path, not as proof that every cause lies inside the agent. A trace does not replace checking whether your application consumed and decoded the response events correctly.
Handle a return-control response if the agent requested an action
Some agent action groups are configured to return control to the caller rather than have the agent execute the operation itself. In that flow, the response provides an invocation ID and invocation inputs. Your application performs the requested work, then sends the result in a follow-up InvokeAgent request using the matching invocation ID and action group. This lets the agent continue with the result and formulate a response.

- MEET ECHO SPOT - A sleek smart alarm clock with Alexa and big vibrant sound. Ready to help you wake up, wind down, and so much more.
- CUSTOMIZABLE SMART CLOCK - See time, weather, and song titles at a glance, control smart home devices, and more. Personalize your display with your favorite clock face and fun colors.
- BIG VIBRANT SOUND - Enjoy rich sound with clear vocals and deep bass. Just ask Alexa to play music, podcasts, and audiobooks. See song titles and touch to control your music.
- EASE INTO THE DAY - Set up an Alexa routine that gently wakes you with music and gradual light. Glance at the time, check reminders, or ask Alexa for weather updates.
- KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.
Follow AWS’s return-control instructions and match the follow-up result to the invocation that requested it. If returnControlInvocationResults is included in session state, AWS says inputText is ignored for that request. Do not assume that a missing user-facing answer means the initial request failed if the agent intentionally handed the action back to your application.
Check whether your client expects streamed response chunks
By default, InvokeAgent returns a chunk containing the complete response. Optional final-response streaming instead delivers multiple ordered events, each containing part of the response. AWS describes the default behavior in its InvokeAgent documentation and streaming configuration in InvokeAgent response streaming.

| Mode | How the text arrives | Client handling | Permission check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default complete response | One chunk contains the complete response. | Read and decode the chunk’s bytes. | The streaming-specific permission is not identified as a requirement for this default mode in the cited guidance. |
| Final-response streaming | Multiple ordered events contain response parts. | Consume events in order, decode each chunk’s bytes, and accumulate the parts. | The execution role needs bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream. |
These are delivery modes, not guaranteed fixes for an empty response. If you enabled streaming, confirm that your event loop handles multiple ordered events and that the execution role has the documented permission. A missing permission is a configuration issue to investigate, not proof that it caused every empty response.
Verify that you tested the prepared agent configuration
AWS recommends preparing a working draft before testing and preparing it again after updates. Check the agent’s Last prepared value or the API’s preparedAt field to confirm the configuration you intended to test was packaged. AWS’s testing and troubleshooting guidance also describes isolating behavior by enabling or disabling action groups and knowledge bases, then preparing the changes before testing.

The API test alias TSTALIASID points to the DRAFT version. If your test uses that alias, confirm that you prepared the draft after the most recent configuration change; otherwise, you may be testing a different configuration than the one you expect.
A practical diagnostic order
- Capture the full response stream. Record which events arrived and inspect chunk bytes, return-control details, and errors—not just the application’s final display string.
- Enable trace. Set
enableTracetotrueand inspect the agent’s orchestration path. - Complete any returned action. If the response contains return-control invocation details, perform the operation and submit the result with the matching invocation ID and action group.
- Check streaming behavior. If final-response streaming is enabled, accumulate decoded chunks in order and verify the execution role’s response-stream permission.
- Confirm the tested draft. Prepare the working draft after updates and verify
Last preparedorpreparedAt.
Without the raw response events, trace, agent configuration, and client parsing code, the exact cause of a particular incident remains unknown. AWS’s documentation describes the relevant response and troubleshooting mechanisms, but it does not define “empty agent response” as one universal failure mode.
