On a Samsung Galaxy, “mailbox” can mean email, SMS/MMS messages, or carrier voicemail—and each is cleared in a different place. Choose the type you mean before deleting anything: phone storage cleanup will not increase a carrier voicemail quota, and deleting texts will not clear an email account.
Which mailbox do you need to clear?

Clear email in Samsung Email
- Check the account and folder. Open Samsung Email and confirm which account and folder you are viewing. If you have more than one account, messages in one account are separate from those in another.
- Select the messages to remove. Samsung’s Galaxy guidance describes selecting multiple emails and deleting or archiving them. The exact controls and labels may differ by device, app version, region, and account.
- Check Trash separately if you need to empty it. A Samsung Community accepted reply describes this option: open Trash, tap Edit, choose Select All, then tap Delete. This is a community-reported path, not a universal official procedure; verify the selection before confirming, as deletion and server-side effects depend on the provider and account.
- Confirm the result with your email provider if needed. If messages remain visible in webmail or you are trying to free account storage, check the provider’s own instructions or account view. Do not assume deleting from the app permanently removes server copies or frees quota.
Older email is missing, but may not be deleted
A short sync window can hide older messages in Samsung Email. Samsung recommends checking the account’s Email sync period, searching for the message, or scrolling to load older mail. Clear SMS or MMS in Samsung Messages
- Open Messages and select the conversation or message you want to remove. You can select multiple items, including all, when that option is available.
- Tap Delete and confirm Move to Trash.
- To remove items from Trash, open More options > Trash, select the messages, and choose the available delete option. Labels may vary by model, carrier, and software.
Samsung’s support page states: “The message will remain in the Trash for 30 days.” To recover one during that period, open More options > Trash, select it, and tap Restore. Samsung also documents an option to disable Trash; consider whether you need the recovery window before turning it off. See Samsung’s instructions for using Samsung Messages.

Clear a carrier voicemail mailbox
Voicemail is generally handled by your mobile carrier, not by Samsung Email or Samsung Messages. Use your carrier’s voicemail access instructions to listen to and delete messages. Some messages may be archived or retained separately from the main inbox, depending on the service.

If callers still hear “mailbox full” after you delete messages, contact the carrier and ask it to check the voicemail account’s capacity, provisioning, and deletion or retention rules. A Samsung Community discussion describes a customer resolving a full-mailbox warning after deleting older archived messages, but that is an anecdote—not a universal procedure or carrier policy. Phone storage space and carrier voicemail capacity are separate.

If the warning is that the phone is low on storage, review apps, photos, downloads, and other large files in device settings. This can make room on the phone, but it does not by itself increase an email provider’s quota or a carrier’s voicemail capacity. Samsung’s device-storage guide also describes an automatic message-deletion setting that can remove older messages after the device reaches 200 text messages or 20 multimedia messages; those are the thresholds Samsung gives for that setting, not universal device limits. Check the setting carefully before enabling it, since it may delete messages you intended to keep. See Samsung’s guide to freeing storage on a phone or tablet.

Before removing files or messages, check whether they may be held in a Trash folder. Samsung Messages, in particular, keeps deleted messages recoverable for the stated period unless the relevant setting or workflow differs on your device.
